Wait a minute, the X800 line doesn't have High Dynamic Range support? Even my 6600GT has that.

Yes, the X800 series is really over-rated. It's not feature rich, just clocked higher than most Nvidia cards.

Wait for the next-gen R520 series to really make it a run at Nvidia.

The single card solution is the only way to go. But I would have to recommend an Sli capable motherboard which gives you the option....

Correct me if i'am wrong, but i thought support for shaders 3.0 only made the calculations faster by adding a few tricks into the chip. However, i thought it was possible to achieve the same level of quality with lower grade shaders, like lets say 2.0b, but at the cost of speed. Am i totally beside the track?

You're right, but the cost is so immense that the effects will bring an X800 to its knees. In fact, even some of the SM3.0 capable Nvidia cards struggle with the longer shaders. The 7800GTX, however, apears to be able to run very long shaders quite efficiently.

Dual 6600GT will indeed give you better performance IN SLI CAPABLE games to approx a single 6800GT level, but it's just not worth the hassle.

Actually the x800xL beats the 6600gt SLi setup in most benches (can we even consider Doom3 a benchable game?).

I have a 6600gt and I would get an x800xL honestly. The 6600gt's are good cards but the x800xL is still the best card for the money on the market, for now.

Well, from what I can see from reviews and benchmarks, the 6800 GT PCIe generally ends up on top of the x800xl PCIe, although the nVidia is more expensive. However, thanks to HeroOfPellinor's sharp eye, I've gotten a great deal on a 6800 GT PCIe, which should be on its way right now XD

Yes it does, its just that with sm 3.0, HDR will look better (hence Half-life's Low quality [ati] and high quality [nvidia] HDR levels

My rig:
Vantec 470w 24Pin
CBBFD 0440 Winnie 3000+ @ 2.477
Asus A8N-E Deluxe
Corsair TwinX-3200XLPro TCCD 2x512
Asus EN6600Gt SLi / Stock Cooling No OC
2x36Gb Raptors

77.72 Drivers
3dMark01se: 21673
3dMark05: 6478

I just got this together, flipped the HTT up a bit and ran some benchies
Im pretty sure that the 6800Gt is getting around 5000 in 05, so thats not bad if you ask me. Again, this is stock cooling and no Vcard OC

You'd be surprised. Some people remain junkies.

I'm suprised you score much lower in 2k1 but scored so well in 05..

Granted 2k1 is more likely to gain points by CPU speed, I didn't think 2x6600's would break 6K..

I score about 6400 with a single X850 @ stock.

Like me. Then again, it probably helped that I had a woman from the get go when I entered college three years ago, so I could spend some time gaming instead of chasing the ladies.
