802.11b w/AP: When playing a LAN game, do connections go through AP, or from computer to computer?

My question is basically in teh subject line... with an 802.11b network, say you are playing a LAN game with two computers. Do the communications between the two computers have to go through the access point and to the other computer(s), or do they go directly between the two computers?

Thanks!

plz detail your setup. for example i have a 802.11b with no acces point, just a usb orinoco client a wireless smc router. in my case it goes from one wireless computer to router, and then through wire to other computer.

3 clients with Orinoco USB adapters and an access point (SMC Barricade), as I stated above.

Edit: spelling.

Ahh, I see what you're saying. My access point is a router as well (SMC Barricade), but in my case all clients (except the fileserver) are on wireless.

Yes, when you are using an AP with clients set to infrastructure then they do pass through the AP first. Look at it like this. An ap is a wireless hub, just using Radio Frequencies instead of Cat5 as the medium. If you want to bypass the AP, as long as all clients are in the same cell area, generally the same room or very very close if you want to be sure, set the cards to Ad Hoc. That is basically a workgroup. Wireless.

Actually you have an AP that routes. Easier to call it a router. Still an Access Point for wireless clients.

Yes, if your using an AP, your going through it to the wired side of your ethernet to your wired computer/server.

You can use your wireless PCCards in ad-hoc mode and have them talk directly to each other if you really want to do that.

I have three D-Link DWL 650 wireless NIC and a Linksys wireless AP with router. D-Link NIC allows me to setup either go through infrastructure (through router) or just ad-hoc (computer to computer).
