802.11g question (WRT54G dd-wrt)

Hey guys,

Wondering if you can help me out. I have a flashed Linksys WRT54G v3.1 router. I am running Brainslayers v24 dd-wrt firmware. I have a Comcast cable HSI.

On my wired desktop I am getting 24-27Mbps. On Wireless I am getting about 8-10Mbps. Tests were done using speedtest.net

I thought it would be faster on wireless. Does my wireless speed look normal based on my wired speeds? Distance isn't really a problem since I am in a condo. Tests were done when I was near the router.

When I was at my brothers house I was able to get 15-16Mbps through his wireless router and he had similar wired speeds as me. This is almost double the speeds I am getting at my own house. I am wondering why I can not achieve the same wireless speeds at my own home.

Wireless can be tricky to troubleshoot. One thing to watch out for is interference. Which channel are you running your wireless on? Are there lots of other wireless routers/networks in your area? Also, try speedtest at different times during the day to see if your speed stays the same. If it fluctuates, I'm guessing you have neighbors who are generating interference of some sort.

That's totally normal and actually good in a noisy environment like apartment/condo where likely all your neighbors have wireless as well.

If you have an iPhone or Android, there are lots of apps that can scan the wireless "air" for all the broadcasted networks which will then also give you the channel info. Try and pick a channel that either isn't being used or lesser.

ok thanks guys.. makes sense that it might be interference from other signals around the condo. I'll take your advice and do a scan to make sure I'm using the least used channel
