im gonna be buying a new harddrive for archiving large amounts of data. mostly just vcdz/isoz. is a 5400 rpm good enought for archiving data or should i get the 7200rpm. im thinking about going maxtor. should i try ibm even though of the high failure rates ? which drive would u suggues. either the 60gb 7200rpm maxtor, 80gb 5400rpm maxtor or one of the ibm deskstar drives ?

I would get the 7200 rpm drive. Comp USA has a 100 gig Western Digital 7200 Rpm for 299. If you got the cash that wouldn't be a bad choice.

Go with the 7200, you'll notice the speed difference and 60 gb of storage is a lot more than you think.

I would go Maxtor. As for the 80gig 5400 or 60gig 7200RPM. You have to ask yourself do you want more speed or more space? Yeah the 7200RPM will tranfer faster than the 5400rpm but would you rather it take longer to tranfer files and have more space or tranfer faster and have less space?

If it's really for archiving, then 80gb.
If you have plan to rip or encoding divx then 60gb 7200 RPM.

20gb extra is nice and useful considering it is for archiving.

atm im leaning more towards the 80gb 5400rpm drive because of the extra 20gb. is there a considerable ammount of difference between 5400rpm and 7200rpm? on the other hand i am thinking that 60gb should be enough for archiving.

hmm.. tough choice..

i think ill most likey get the 60gb 7200rpm..

60GB Diamond Max Plus 60 Ultra/DMA 100 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive Maxtor (Hard Drives) For PC/Mac 1-2 Day(s) $189.95

is that a resonable price for that drive? Its from OUTPOST.com

ive looked at some prices on pricewatch.com. they have the same drive around $150. but i dont think i would trust those companies on there becuase they are small companies and i really havent heard anything about them... ive ordered lots of stuff from outpost and they are extremely reliable although it sucks that they charge shipping charges now

if it's strictly archiving id go with 80 gig. the speed wont really matter (for storing mp3's, etc). but if you do a lot of transferring (playing games, etc) then get the 7200 rpm.

you can get an ibm 60 gig 7200 rpm from newegg.com for 148 and 8 shipping.

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60GB 60 Ultra DMA 100 5T060H6 EIDE Hard Drive 3.5" form 7200rpm - OEM VERSION - Drive Only - Three Year Manufacturer Warranty

it is $157.00 w/ $8.00 shipping..

now my question is does NEWEGG.com ship to Canada. and if so how much do they charge for shipping to British Columbia, CANADA...

if its alot i can always order the drive to my cousins house who lives in WA which is like half an hour drive away from my house

"Newegg.com accepts the following Payment Methods:
? Visa
? Mastercard
? Discover
? American Express

does that mean that i cant use my credit card (Mastercard) ? i live in canada but the card is mastercard. so can i use that card to order something in the United States.. or do u have to order the item to match the info on your credit card. ?

in my doings I have noticed a much more prevalent increasein speed between ATA33-66-100 rather than 5400 and 7200 RPM. Though SCSI 10K-15K RPM I do notice a big increase =)

I'm buying a tbird 1.4 with 256DDR and geforce3, someoen stop me now...:disgust:
