Who Cares what the seek times are? When you use it to play mp3's it would probably put in an extra .003 of a second to your load time. I'm using it for anime storage and for movie files, it's damn fine.

80 Gigs is perfect for some good solid backup, especially for $99. Much cheaper than an 80-100 gig DLT.

They still have these in alot of stores in Maryland...just so people know.

They had almost 100 in the store in Rockville (they were stacked about 5 feet high).

Yes it will be fine but it begs the question does such a user need 80 gigs?

Well, I never thought I would fill up my 320MB after upgrading from a 20MB HD.

When is this deal over ? Today ... Saturday ...other ???

EDIT:
Found the answer to my own question "These offers are available through Saturday, February 23, 2002. Not all offers are valid at our Abilene, McAllen, Waco, or Tyler locations. "

Now I have to keep telling myself - You dont really need it. You have a 60G sitting unused from the BB Thankgiving sale. Money it tight - there is a recession on. They will have a better deal on Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Keep repeating this mantra to save $$$.

AND WHAT DO THEY HAVE AGAINST Abilene, McAllen, Waco, or Tyler locations ANYWAY

Here is a review of the 160 GB version of this drive:

Storage Review

The 80 GB version just has two fewer platters and performs the same.

I think the performance is fine. In fact, it smokes all 5400 RPM drives, but just doesn't quite cut it against 7200 RPM drives. Oh well. $111 shipped is awesome.

Picked one up today, its now my "shared folder" for a certain program. Works great! Practically silent to boot. Still had plenty left at the Comp USA store in GSO NC.

Picked one up in Louisville, KY store. They had one left on the shelf, but probably more in the back since the spot on the shelf would only hold about 3. Now if I could just stop worrying about the seek times

Im must say, the only thing keeping me from getting another for a RAID array is the fact that I'm broke.

And as for the storage review thing, isnt this drive an ata/100 model?

Mine was $113.52 shipped which is cool because I'm going to sell my Maxtor 20G 7200 on eBay for about $70 which will make this drive about $44.

As far as the 5400 rpm thing goes, all I can say is I used to avoid 5400 drives until I got a 60G at the Day after Thanksgiving sell at BB for $49.99 AR. When my wife's boot drive failed (an IBM 75 GXP - ha! big surprise, right?) I installed the OS to the 60G 5400 and it blew me away - installed Windows 98 in about 18 minutes.

According to HDTach it is slow, but according to sitting at the machine and using it is not!

Anway, I do boot from a 72K drive, and this will be used for storage. 18 minutes of digital video from Christmas filled up 3 gig on my Maxtor 20G, so 80 will be nice.

Thanks for the heads up on this deal!

My drive is a Maxtor D540X - I got it and they had PLENTY yesterday at the CUSA store in Vienna, VA (Tysons Corner). The D540X sure the hell IS ATA100.

The closes CompUSA to me run out of them (website said available), had to order 2 on-line at $217.82 (shipping + taxes). Last day to order for this at price is today. Not a bad deal, saved about $80, my time to drive to store and gas (38 miles roundtrip).

on sale for the whole week.
pick one up tonight at Union, NJ. Still has at least 6 stack up on the upper shelf.
A lady in front of me just up one too. I don't think she know too much about computer. (A CSR talks with her and i overheard) But she got a good deal! And me too!
I do not use my AMEX BLUE, but anyhow will the Maxtor D540X sell for lower price for PM? The receipt do not say anything about a COMP USA brand!

Picked one up today in the store. I got a Fireball LCT 40 drive inside. The model number is still D540X-4K with an actual model number 4K080H4 instead of the 4D080H4. Is everybody getting the same drive ? What's the difference ? I think the 4K080H4 model is actually a Quantum drive, now owned by Maxtor. Is one better than the other ? Feedback please.

I picked up two today and they both have Kit #: K06H080G. Does anyone know if these are the Maxtors or Quantums?

The kit # means close to nothing about which drive is contained inside....maxtor's kits are almost as good as cracker jacks....cause there's almost always a surprize inside :Q

kit # decoder....

I live in San Diego but was in Edison NJ on business. Walked into the store on HWY1 in Edison at 8:50pm, they had about six on the counter behind the parts desk...good thing i've got a little room in my suitcase From the sounds of things they're pretty scarce back home.

$1.25 a gig! Nice deal...thanks for the post!

picked up 2 of these yesterday at the Perimeter store in Atlanta. they were stacked on top of the shelf where the regular HDs are, so don't give up. they were stacked 2 high and 2 wide, but i couldn't tell how deep they were since they were up so high. i'm 6'0" and had to have help getting them down.

anyway, i put them in raid0, no problems at all. heh, i'm so used to only having one drive though, that i'd forgotten how slow it is to copy from one HD to another.

this is a great deal; let's hope i don't get laid off soon!
