Received my drive from the online order and it's a Quantum. Note that the Maxtor Acoustic Management Software works fine with the Quantum chip.

Great deal! I was soooooo outgrowing my 10 GB!

BTW, Partition Magic 7 owns. I had this drive split up into three even 25 GB NTFS partitions in five minutes.

edited because the ACS does work after all.

The CompUSA site is telling me they still are in stock of these drives at a couple of stores in the NYC area, at least as of this morning. And since this sale lasts "through" Feb 23, I will be heading to the closest store tomorrow morning.

I was scared by a post on the 1st page saying 1 year warranty. However, box says 3 and it's Tax-free PC + week here in PA. My CompUSA has them coming out of the wazoo!! Can't beat straight out $99. BTW, CompUSA has dropped the price on the Radeon 8500 to $199. Would have bought that too had I not already ordered a GF4 Ti4600.

I received a Quantum drive as well. I also have a 80 Gig Maxtor firewire drive which is actually a Maxtor drive unit. I used the acustic management software to turn off the "quite" mode on both drives. If you cannot run the acoustic management software use the onboard IDE channels rather than nay expansion cards. There is at least one MAJOR difference between the true Maxtor drive and the Quantum rebadge. The Maxtor is 2 gigs bigger, kinda pisses me off as I was going to move the firewire drive to the new drive and reformat as I had some problems with my firewire drive and I cannot move the entire drive to the new drive I got (yes I have filled 80 gigs). Oh well. If anyone got a true Maxtor drive let us know, the real Maxtors have a TI chipset on the bottom rather than Quantum and have a formatted capacity of 76.3 gigs where the Qunatum drive is around 74.5 gigs formatted.

i actually got 2 extra ones of these drives..

still sealed....

if anyone here needs to be hooked up, please EMAIL me.

my price:
$99.99 + tax + shipping.

I believe that as AT members, we should pass on hot deals to one another if we get the opportunity.

However, if u want to offer me a little something for my troubles (like a little extra cash,or even a DVD), that would be pretty cool.

BTW, Technocrat, I sent u an PM.

According to the compusa site the Edison, NJ store should still have these drives in Stock but they dont. I think someone is hiding a dive behind the counter,

The Freehold has some left, according to the sales person i spoke to they have a lot left, but in the time it took me to get mine two more sold. If you haven't
snapped up one of the these yet and are in NJ the freehold store has then in stock.....

I got three of these drives today. One I picked up by myself... next time my friend got two.

From the store in NYC on 57th street & Broadway. They keep them locked away at the business sales counter. If you want one, hurry, store closes at 7

Fry's has 80GB seagate 7200 rpm for $99 after $50 MIR
Also, today I got the canon S600 printer for $149, and the guy gave me a $20 discount when I bought 5 year warranty for $39.
So printer+ warranty came out to $149+$39-$20.
I guess these guys make more comission on selling warranty than product. He discounted the printer $20 to sell a $40 warranty. I was just gonna get the 3 year one for $25, but if I can get a 5 year one for $20, it's not a bad deal.

Good thing I didn't install this CompUSA/Maxtor 80gb/5400 HD yet after buying it last Tuesday. Although I hate mir's, I had to go ahead and pick up the Seagate Barracuda IV 80gb/7200 deal at Houston Fry's - $139 - $50MIR = $89! I think ... no really ... that it will take a while for me to fill up 80gb (if I dutifully burn stuff to CDR's) so might as well get something fast enough to live with for a while and at a cheaper price. I'm returning the CompUSA/Maxtor drive today as good a deal as it was. BTW, the Fry's Seagate drive is really BARE, nothing but a plastic no-security-seal enclosure. Heck - the installation steps are on a drive sticker!

Just a quick word on this, I know the deal is over. Friday night at 7:30 pm I called my local comp usa. Asked if they had any of these HD's left. He said sure we have 4. So I jump in the shower take the ride down there and show up at 8:30. I go to the HD window and theres none in there. So i ask an ASSociate and he says hes sorry they are all out. I say but i just called less than an hour ago. He goes "yeah the system shows four in stock, but they seem to be missing." You gotta be $hitting me!!!!! Missing? Bunch of jerks stashed em somewhere. Seems the more times i walk into Comp USA the more times I walk out empty handed. This was the Edison NJ store by the way!

My local CompUSA shows "limited quantities" so I decided to drop by and see. They were of course sold out. The shelf tag dated 2/24/02 shows the instore price as $139.99 anyway. So I guess the website price doesn't matter in the store anyway.

Dang, I really wanted one for me ReplayTV too!
