take care,
Jason

This is from the rebate:

Ideal for speed-intensive applications such as editing videos, playing games, listening to music or just adding additional hard drive storage to your system. Up to 30 times faster than USB, the 3000DV features the Maxtor award-winning 7,200 RPM hard drive - up to 56% faster than our 5400RPM hard drive version.

I thought we were getting the 5400RPM so I don't thing the rebate is good for the drive that we are getting?

FYI - The model that Staples is selling is NOT the 3000DV that is required for the $30 Maxtor MIR. The Staples model is the 3000LE which is no longer produced. The main difference between the two is that the LE is 5400 RPM whereas the DV is 7200 RPM. There are no current Maxtor promotions for the 3000LE, but at $90 each out the door with a free PPP I will still take'em

i really don't know what you are talking about... i received the 3000DV one. the LE one is USB... is yours USB??? Mine is Firewire. Take Care

MAC USER ADVISORY

Please read the thread on FW. I encountered MAJOR problems with this drive. I've posted a thread there from MacFixit.com concerning others with the same problem. It seems the firmware is not compatible with many Macs and/or firewire PCI cards.

I wasted 2 days on this thing (which has been returned), and lost data files that I could not transfer back.

Beware!!

are those problems applied to the windows system too with firewire pci cards?

ease up on the bold ok...seems this kit X01FWRA080 shares model lineage with the new USB 2.0 LE model...so...
..wildting88 submit your $30 MIR that does not list the product by either UPC or by kit number. I am aiming at the $50 MIR with combined purchase of Maxtor's DV Producer (firewire card, cable and video software..) as kit X01FWRA080 is listed on this
$50 Maxtor MIR ..As always YMMV

Scored one here. Called the 800 number and had them check my zip code. showed one in stock. called the local store and he said he was pretty sure inventory was off by one, but would check. Came back and said it they had one, but it was marked damaged return. I asked him to fire it up and see if it was true. He called back and said it was working fine, and I could have it for $100 bucks even. I said I'll take it. Just got it home and plugged it into my new inspiron 8100 (thank you very much anandtech, it's one AWESOME lappy), and it showed up instantly as drive E. Copies were fast to. I'm luvin it.

BTW, has anyone reformatted to NTFS (comes Fat32)? Would that be a good idea?

This is my second firewire external (built one to go with my Mac), and the Maxtor case is light and seems very portable. I'd say unless your a Mac User go for it.

Oh and BTW, My other external firewire IS a Maxtor DiamonMax 80 gig and I had the same issues at first formatting the drive to work with my G4. Ultimately it was speed tools that did the job as well as returning the case I originally got for a Mercury Elite sold by Other World Computing. I plan on using this new Maxtor exclusively with my PCs.

I picked up one of these in Queens, NY plus a Maxtor firewire card for a grand total of $140 after tax and coupon (thanks obese pocketbook!).

Didn't realize that the $50 rebate for the firewire card and the drive was expired, but I figure, hey - I really only paid $20 for the card after the coupon, which I wouldn't have been able to use otherwise is factored in.

Just a little peeved that I didn't read the fine print, because I am sure that they are not charging much more for the DV producer kit. Still psyched about the drive, as the forums were just "advertising" a firewire enclosure for like $60, so for an extra 40 I get an 80 gigger, sounds good to me

mine has an on/off switch. altho, if the drive is "off" and the firewire is plugged in.. winxp won't boot (it'll hang.. and once you unplug the firewire.. it'll keep going).

also, as i said before.. a little concerned about heat. Don't really want to "mod" it so i can keep my warranty. Check out cnet's user reviews on this.. seems to have reliability problems? Hard to say because those users may have traveled more w/ the drive (which i doubt is a good thing, it's just a regular HD.. a laptop drive would suit better.. i would think)

Is a 5400 RPM drive, posibly rated an ATA 66, hitting the bandwidth limits of a firewire link speed of 400Mbps? I don't know the real throughput of drives. I'm considering ebaying mine and waiting for a deal on a 7200 model later, but don't know if the true effective bandwidth will be improved or not.

Can anyone comment?

Thanks

The On/Off switch was eliminated. All of the current boxes have a sticker on the box that covers the switch.

I don't know you but I have an ATA 100 drive in it open it, is really easy and you don't have any sticker around the box so you don't violate the warranty.

SB Audigy 1394 Port WILL WORK according to Creative Labs.

I checked out the SB1394 specs and it says it supports hard disks. Also, in their list of "other" supported devices, it lists the Maxtor 80GB 1394 Firewire HD Ext .

They also mention the following:

"Note:
Other SB1394 Devices
[*]The 1394-equipped products list is intended as a guideline only and should not be interpreted as a performance guarantee with the SB1394 connectivity.
[*]Devices shown in the 1394-equipped products list have not neccessary completed the SB1394 Certification scheme."

I'm thinking even if it doesn't perform at optimal speeds, it'll tide me over until I upgrade my motherboard... sometime. As for the SB1394 Certification, I think it's a way for Creative to make some money in the name, like how Microsoft would like to certify all drivers.

Has anyone actually tried it and found that it absolutely will not work?

BTW, this is my first post to the forum. w00t!

That is the actual firewire port I'm using since I bought it, I needed a soundcard and a firewire port so I bought the Audigy last year, I was just running a cdrw thru that port and now i have the hardrive attach to the cdrw, it works perfect, the Audigy works cool with those two peripherals, and I will be conecting other ones to that port too.

I haven't opened it so I can possibly sell it as "unopened".

Is there any particular clue from the outside of the box that indicates its one of the faster drives, like with 7200 HD instead of 5400?

Thanks
