For those looking for a Firewire card, www.buyaib has a VIA 4 Port for $23 shipped. They also have a USB 2.0 cards from $17.85 to $23 shipped. They both work fine. I hooked up the firewire to my JVC DV camcorder w/o a prob.

Some people have all the luck... we were walking through compusa today and my friend says to me - "isn't that your external 80gb firewire drive right there?". I said, close but not really, since I think the SKU is slightly different, etc... (it was actually teh 7200 rpm model, staples is clearing out the 5400rpm)

He says, well, I'm going to try pricematch anyway. Next thing I know, he gets a clueless compusa kid who is ringing up staples to confirm whether the pricematch is valid. He gets off the phone, has some sort of confused look on his face, and tells us - it used to be $140 at staples, but they had a $40 instant rebate, and it comes with a $30 manufacturer rebate. So, we can only pricematch to $140.

I was stunned. I didn't think my friend would have a chance. But he still sits there and argues for a price of $100 bucks! But they wouldn't allow it. So eventually he walks out with a 7200rpm maxtor for $140, minus a $30 rebate from maxtor!

The killer part is, compusa actually have a deal where you get a FREE firewire card with the drive. He forgot to pick up the free drive. So he rocks back in, and demands the free card. Picks one up from the shelf, the same kid scans the box and says yeah, I suppose it was supposed to be free. And he walks out.

Summary: ends up with a Maxtor external firewire 80gb 3000DV 7200 rpm drive with FREE Maxtor dual port firewire PCI card for $140, minus $30 rebates for the drive, minus $25 rebate for the firewire card! = $95 total.

That was one fluke. Needless to say, this deal makes the original one pale in comparison.

This thing works like a champ with my Dell Inspiron 8200 Notebook. Plus the size of this external box is just right; it fits in one of the pockets of my notebook bag.

Thanks to the guy who posted this deal. Keep the good work up...

BTW I got this drive ($109) + Symantec SystemWorks 2002 ($50) - MIR ($50) - Instore coupon ($30) = $79 before tax...

I purchased three firewire 1394 cards from sybercom.com for $9.00 each. These work perfectly. I'm using 98SE and also installed the 1394 update from Microsoft which resolves a freezing problem if you disconnect or shut off a 1394 peripheral device. According to MS this update improves performance by 300 percent.

As a test I copied 807 MB to this drive in 63 seconds. That's pretty fast.

I'm going to use it to back-up 13 GB from our server in the office every night.

Hehe. Speaking of luck, here's my story regarding this drive:

I went on a Tuesday to my closest Staples which is about a 20 minute drive away to look for the drive. The store didn't have any but the manager found two at a Staples about an hour away. So we decided to have it transferred to this store.

On Friday, the expected arrival day, I called to see if it had come in. It hadn't. Apparently, the girl who was supposed to go pick it up had called in sick. (Huh?) I was told to expect it on Monday. That was okay because my SoundBlaster Audigy card with the firewire port wasn't going to arrive until Tuesday anyway.

On Monday I call and the manager goes looking for it and finds out that it was never transferred. Apparently, the kid had pulled it off the shelf for transfer and the next day someone had come in and bought it. (Huh?) The kid thought it had already been transferred. The manager was able to track down a display model, though, and offered that to me at a 10% discount.

On Wedesday, I get a call saying that the display model had arrived. I drove to the store to purchase it. I was able to use the $15 off $75 on top of the 10% discount so that the final price was about $88. That would be an awesome deal, except I noticed that it was missing a 1394 cable. That cable cost me about $40. After I got home, I found that I needed a 6-6pin cable, not the 4-6pin cable I'd bought. I checked all the stores in the area for a 6-6 cable, but CompUSA was going to be the only place where I could get a 6-6. I drove the 20 minutes (in the other direction) to get to the CompUSA, stopping along the way to return the 6-4 cable in a different Staples. I had called in before leaving to see if they had 6-foot 6-6 cable, and their computer showed 11 in stock. However, none was to be found anywhere in the store by me or the manager. So I settled for a 3 foot cable at about $25.

I come home and plug everything in and find that it's DOA. There's a green light when I turn it on, but I don't hear the drive spinning up. In fact, I don't hear anything coming from the drive. The red light comes on intermittently for seconds at a time as my computer tries to access the drive, but it's not having any success because the drive isn't even spinning.

I called Maxtor tech support and they were very good. I told the lady what the problem was and she suggested that I return it to Staples. I told her that Staples didn't have this model anymore so she gave me an RMA authorization.

It's going to be sometime next week that I'll receive my brand new drive, but I think the wait is well worth it.

Wish me luck.

We still use 98SE because we still have some rating programs that use DOS. The companies supply us their own software and are SLOWLY changing over to windows.

When I installed the firewire card, it was on a new workstation that I had just done a new install of 98SE. When I installed the firewire card PNP asked for the 98SE disk. It installed the driver from that disk and then displayed the message that I should go to microsoft.com and do a search for "Windows 98 Second Edition 1394 Storage Supplement". I then downloaded the file which is called 242975USA8.exe to a floppy and ran it on the workstations with firewire cards. Microsoft also refers to it as the Q242975 Update. You can get this file quickly by typing Q242975 in the search box when you first enter microsoft.com.

I'm not sure if this file is part of the critical updates or not. I ran it on a workstation that has all the critical updates and I didn't get the message asking if I wanted to overwrite an existing file of the same name and date. This file is 584 KB and only takes a few seconds to install.
