I think you may be referring to the thread that was for a Maxtor 80 gig 7200 RPM drive from staples for $80 + tax after coupon/rebate.

Well this is not my main harddrive so 5400 Rpm does not concern me. I always have my OS reside on 7200 Rpm drives. This is a storage only, so 5400 is no prob, as long as its ata100. Although staples has the 7200 Rpm version for $80 after rebate, i already bought that and i can't have more than 1 rebate per household. I need more storage!! Oh yeah and i don't have to deal or wait for rebates

Check one of the past 80GB HD deals. Someone benchmarked a 5400rpm vs 7200rpm drive and found the performance to be very, very close.

My 80GB 5400rpm drive is super quiet compared to my 60GB 7200 rpm.....I'd rather take the reduction in noise, than performance you most likely won't notice....

was going to buy two but shipping of $6.00 (not that bad) and tax $12.25 killed me. http://www.thecomputercenter.com/pw.html has it for $85.00 flat with shipping, a bit much but out of indiana so no shipping. if you do the math, it's actually $6 cheaper for me. just an option for people out there.

I'm about ready to degrade my whole system to 5400rpm drives. I hate the noise that 2 7200 rpm drives put out. It's too much.

How does this drive compare to this drive at :

IBM 80GB 7200RPM Model # IC35L080AVVA07, Part # 07N8084 -120GXP for $89 shipped at newegg.

I really need to get a new drive, 80GB seems to be a sweet spot right now. I heard bad things about IBM drives, but I have a 40GB IBM drive without any problems, a little noisy though.

Depends on which model you are referring too. The 75GXP is everyone's worst nightmare. The 40GXP is much better but I still prefer seagate and maxtor myself over all other hard drive manufacturers.

iamme--

What 7200rpm drives do you have? I've got (4) 30 gig 7200 WD's that I used to run outside, on top of my case....and I would have to put my ear to them to see if they were accessing. Quiet. My old 5400 Maxtor's were rattlers......however, my newest 5400 60 or 80 gig (can't remember) Maxtor is totally quiet.

I have noticed that I can use my 7200 WD's as coffee cup warmers tho.

One caution.....doesn't the <12 ms average seek time seem rather poor?

Since other people brought this up, I think the Maxtor fluid head drives are very quiet. In addition to very small seek noise, the drives don't emit any kind of whine or squeal. Seagate Baracuda IVs are also real quiet. I also have a new WD 400BB which doesn't make much head seeking noise, but does have a very annoying whine. All these are 7,200 rpm drives.
