New info from the GF. BTW if you don't care, then DON'T read it.

Oh and btw there are over 8,000 orders being canceled. The emails are being sent after the actual order is canceled. Also try to call in. They are now instructed to direct you to the complaint line without discussion.

When I completed my on-line order I was able to print off a confirmation page with a "Web order number". That was on 4 Feb, have not heard anything since. I emailed the address on teh confirmation a few days later but have not heard back yet.

Has anyone actually received communications directly from IBM? I mean from IBM itseld, officially, not from a friend who works with someone who sits next to the watercooler and overheard part of a conversaton that was based on a scribbled note on the bathroom wall at the train station.

LOL I had the final order screen minimized the whole weekend the deal happened and all I had to do was hit the "submit" order button, but something told me it was "too good to be true" so I never went through with it.

yep, think it's dead.

Still irritating that a company can advertise a price, then say an error was made, and cancel orders. Wonder if that logic would apply if i entered into a contract with them to provide a service at "x" dollars per hour, then increased my rate; would they hold me to the original agreement?

it's minor, but i'll do what i can to avoid buying or supporting ibm.

congrats to the few who managed to succeed with the deal.

Also note that when IBM first became aware of the incorrect price they refused all orders for that part. By the next day they were again taking orders. To put it into a time frame. They were refusing phone orders on the sixth but were accepting them again on the seventh.

Does this not imply that they acknowledged this as the correct price?

Not saying there is anything nefarious and I am not saying that they are doing the right thing either.

I am just confused.

If not, then more encouragement to believe that they won't support their products or warrenties in the future.

Regardless of how they try to spin it, consumers drive the industry, and you will only be able to throw the consumers into the dirt so many times, before they leave.......
LOL
I am willing to bet that 99% of the people that tried to get in on this hot deal never have and never will buy anything from IBM. I'm sure IBM knows this as well. It would be sheer idiocy for them to fullfill 8000+ orders at that price, even if it was their cost price. So in short, they aren't losing any customers.
I have bought several Thinkpads from IBM and paid much more than a comparable Dell etc. because IMO they are worth it. I would never dream of paying their full price of $522.00 for a drive I can get elsewhere for less than $200.00.

Congrats to the people that received one. I don't expect my order to be fulfilled and I won't piss and moan about it either.

And legally they are covered anyway, here is an excerpt from their order acceptance policy...

"If a Product is quoted at an incorrect price due to typographical error or error in pricing information:
1) Lenovo has the right to refuse or cancel any orders placed for the Product quoted at the incorrect price, even if Lenovo has confirmed the receipt of your order and charged your credit or debit card: and
2) If Lenovo has charged your credit or debit card but subsequently canceled your order, Lenovo will promptly issue a credit to your credit or debit card account for the amount charged."

Go to the order page and find the Aqisition Agreement for the complete areement.

Put the shoe on the other foot.
If they had to fullfill every mistake made, this drive might sell for $800.00 in future.

No doubt I might be chasing windmills on this one, but likely there are others who feel like me and will do what they can. related to that, i feel strongly enough about my purchasing habits that my kids when shopping for me, won't buy items that are made in China due to my feelings of not supporting China. Yes it does limit what i buy, but it's a choice i make.

I have purchased IBM products in the past. When the IBM Deskstar hard drive was released, it was one of the fastest if not the fastest IDE drive available. I bought 4 of them. With in the first year all 4 drives had failed. They were all OEM drives and IBM would not provide any replacements. This would not be unusual except it was noted industry wide that this drive had a much higher than avg. failure rate which IBM continued to deny.
**Paraphrased from an industry mag. If I can find a link or remember the mag I will add it**
It became so bad that two top tier pc vendors told IBM that they would no longer be using the Deskstar drive due to it's failure rate. An internal memo that was leaked from IBM detailed what happened next. When the account rep from IBM questioned what he was supposed to do about these vendors, he was told to tell them that IBM had made changes to the drives and that they were no longer the same. At the time this article was published these vendors were one of the groups that was involved in sueing IBM. I do not know how or if this suit or any of the other were settled.

Again this is not to say that IBM either then or now has either been incompetant or malicious.

Why if I had such an experience with IBM products would I order something from them? $$$ ya, call me a whore.

Here it is the 75GXP was the model that was the cat's meow when it was released. I remember all the benchmarks and everyone talking about how great this drive was. It was too until they started to croak. No warnings for me. One day they worked, and the next nothing. Just whirr click, whirrrr click. I have never had any other desktop drive fail in one of my computers. Heck I still have an 800MB drive that I fired up last year just to see if it would. I have worked on other peoples computers with failed drives, but mine which run 24X7 just seem to keep going and going.*This excludes laptop drives.

Fortuneatly, I never used those drives, but to show how times have changed, the Travelstar has been and still is considered probably the best laptop drive. Seagate of late has had a big push to dislodge them.

Yeah, I am debating right now what to put in my new laptop. From what I see they are the ONLY 7200 rpm laptop drives on the market.

I might just go with a 5400, as I am not sure for just gaming(RTS and click fest RPG stuff mostly) and general usage if I will notice a huge difference. I mean during the game load or loading levels sure but other wise, I don't know if it is worth the price jump.

I bought a couple of the 5k100 (5400) 80gig drives a few month's ago and have noticed a dramatic improvement over the 4200. At the time, I read several tests that reported that other than at boot, the 7200rpm drive showed little if any speed difference in real time use over the 5400.
