To help with some of the questions:

Series 2 DO NOT work without a subscription. Period. Series 1 does do basic service without a subscription. Let me reiterrate, you have a useless box with a series 2 and no subscription.

If you're hung up on buying it because of the initial call which does need to be through a land line, take it to someone's house who has one. End of story. Once it's done, take it home and you're good to go. Have done this several times for a friend who also didn't have a land line at one point.

Regarding the rebate, it needs to be clarified if you need to pre-buy a year of service at the cost of $155, or if you just need to have a 1-year committment @ the $12.95/mo.

EDIT: Last part answered in the FAQ:

TiVo® or TiVo Plus? service activation will require a one-year commitment. Service must remain active for 12 continuous months. Cancellation prior to 12 months will incur a $150 early termination fee. See www.tivo.com/privacy for details.

I'm pretty sure the only difference between the Humax unit and a TiVo unit is the Humax is manufactured by them.
That's my understanding.

It looks like you buy a $127 Tivo from Dell and get a $150 rebate from Tivo?
I don't really know. that's what the rtebate says. There's no language in the form to indicate they won't pay the $150 just because it cost you less. Of course I am not the one paying out the money so I don't have any say in it. They can do what they want.

Can you use the rebate on this one?
You can use the rebate on series 2 stand alone units that have service numbers that start with 110, 130, 140, 230, 240, 264, 275, 540, 565, 590, 595. You can find out if the model you're considering meets this here.

What if you have Direct TV?
If you have directv you need a different unit that isn't part of this rebate program.

Hope this helps. More info in this thread TiVo $150 MIR Newegg price $89.99 before rebate.

OOPS! looks like Dell changed the price on the 80hr from $127.95 to $253. Sorry.

Ok guys, this looks like a great deal. However, I have a few questions. I'm getting Direct TV, so will this unit work fine with my Direct TV satellite receiver? Also, can I pull my recorded shows off and transfer them to my PC for editing? I'm assuming I'll need one of these to get any kind of transferring done if it's even possible.

Thanks guy. If this unit checks out ok with you guys, this will be my first Tivo.

I'm sure you guys have already seen this, but for DirectTV customers, CC is selling the DirecTV 70hr DVR Tivo (R10) for FREE AR! I think I might pick one of these up.

Edit: Alright, did some reading and the great deal on the R10 doesn't look like such a great deal after all. It looks like this is a series 2.5 Tivo and the mods (which I'm assuming need to be done to get my recorded shows off the Tivo) don't work as of yet. No good for me. Oh well.

Like you discovered, the DirecTV DVR is cheaper than getting a TiVo, from both an initial investment standpoint and with a cheaper monthly rate. You do lose some functions with the DTV TiVo. For instance, you can't transfer files off of it without hacking. If you have a standalone unit it's dead easy to transfer stuff off using the TivoToGo software. Like I said earlier, I recommend using the Linksys USB200M for a ethernet adapter.

With a standalone Tivo, how does the unit change channels on the DirecTV receiver when?

You can use an IR blaster for that. I'm just assuming it works on DirecTV receivers. I know that it works with a Motorola digital cable box using a RS-232 port. It's possible that'll work on the DTV receiver. I've heard complaints that channel surfing is a nightmare using this setup though and I tend to believe it. I'm guessing theres about a half second lag when you press the change channel button to when it actually changes. There's another half second delay when you do that on a TiVo so you'll have a 1 second delay every time you change channels. Thats not exactly fun. I know that it was annoying on the digital cable setup. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the information Born! With that, I think I'm going to get the R10 Tivo and just wait for a hack. They should have one eventually.

All the hostility! Yeah, they seem to be in the know on this, so you should probably pay them mind. I'm tempted but just can't justify this. I'd like to build a myth box outta the 1400 mhz AMD I've got sitting gathering dust.

Just a heads up, Bestbuy has the DirecTV DVR R10 (70Hrs/80Gig) for FREE AR
Rings up $99.99 with $100.00 rebate.

My problem is hooking the motha up...and I did get in on the Humax 80Hrs Series2 TiVO for $127.95 at Dell.com...I am going to cancel that since the Humax doesn't have the dual tunner functionality. Plus I guess for me to spend $299 for a lifetime of the box subscriptoin, divid that by $5.99/mo rate over at DTV...That would be 50 months of service. By then I will prolly move on up to HD DVR

Anyone knows how to hook up the DTV DVR?
My currect setup is I have 2 receiver. Would I need another line in from the dish? or I could just use the current 2 lines to get my DVR setup? Would I be able to watch live TV even if I am recording 2 shows at the same time using the DVR and watch normal DTV on the secondary receiver?

I looked there, and cannot find it, what is search criteria to find out how to hook up w/o landline. Also, i heard u can just use your neighbors phone for setup, true?

You can use any phone line you please to do the initial setup. I'd still just recommend using a ethernet adapter and the ",#401" prefix for the "phone call". The two network adapters that I recommend (I've used both for this) are the Linksys USB200M and the Belkin F5D5050.

The basic idea to getting yourself setup without a landline is you plug in your ethernet adapter BEFORE you plug in the power for the TiVo. Then you run through the setup the same as usual but making sure you put in a prefix instead of leaving it blank. Again, the prefix is comma pound four zero one. If you plug the power in to the TiVo before the ethernet adapter, all is not lost. Just go back to the beginning of the setup and tell it to work in kiosk mode. Then just unplug it and plug it back in (making sure that your ethernet adapter is already connected). Keep in mind that when you enter kiosk mode (or whatever it is they call it) it will delete all of your previously recorded shows if you've already used the TiVo before.

Good luck.

I have the DTV Tivo with 2 tuners. You will need one line from the satellite (or a multiswitch) for each tuner you are hooking up. So if you want to record 2 shows on the tivo and watch a third on the secondary receiver, you will need 3 lines from the satellite. You can use the 2 lines you already have if you only want the tivo unit to be hooked up. Also, with this unit you can record 2 channels and watch something you have recorded all at the same time, but you cannot record 2 channels and watch a 3rd, unless like you say, you watch it on another receiver. Also, if you do not want to run another line for your tivo unit, you can choose in the setup to just run it as a single-tuner unit.
Hope that helps some.
