what do you recommend? the rear exhaust in my pc has a ton of wind noise for some reason and the front intake isn't too quite either. thanks.

Getting quieter fans usually means lower rpm and thus airflow. Before you replace the fans, what kind of case do you have? You just want to be sure that if you do replace the fans, you still have sufficient airflow for your case and system, hence the case question.

The best (in my opinion) of quiet 80mm fans are the Nexus brand. However, here are a few options: http://www.coolerguys.com/80quiet.html

I personally have never used the Arctic Cooling fans, however, I have read positive reviews of them. I never bought them because they cannot be used as intake fans, as you have noticed. Temperature-controlled fans rely upon an attached thermal sensor that you can place somewhere in the case. The sensor then changes the fan speed depending on the sensor. I definitely do not like the idea since it just adds more wires strung inside the case (I don't like case clutter) and since the fan is quiet anyway, why bother with adjusting the fan speed? Just let the thing run full speed. I could see the benefit of a thermal sensor with some noisy high-speed fan, but for quiet fans, I just don't see the need.

P.S. -- The Arctic cooling model has more depth than most fans (45mm versus 25mm) so double-check the clearance in your case before you order.

There are a couple of fans marketed by Silverstone that are unique. The give a 90mm fan blade on an 80mm mounting plate. One is the FN82 and the other is the FM82. I was able to find both using froogle. Here is a link to the Silverstone fan page.

theres only so much one can do with 80mm, its too small. only large fans like 120mm can move air without spining quickly. plus small fans make higher pitched noise. cut out fan grills that are restrictive, use low rpm or fan controller and use dampeners. thats all u can do. it will reduce airflow, but theres no way around it. if you want silence get a case built for silence like the sonata/p150/p180.

arctic cooling fans are very good fans however, i wouldnt recommend the thermal controlled versions. These fans do actually move a decent amount of air at low noise levels, but you have no control over how fast your fan is spinning with TC versions. If you like these fans, then look for a non TC version. For me personally i would go for the Panaflo 80mm fans, however, since your case only has room for 2 80mm case fans, then i would not suggest the L1A since you will probably not have enough airflow in your case. Go for the medium speed of any higher cfm fan.

The Panaflos are great fans (I have a 120mm one on my XP-120 heatsink) but I am really annoyed that they do not include a fan rpm monitor. Even cheap fans include one, so what is with Panasonic? Because of this issue, I have to plug in one of my Nexus fans to the CPU fan connector on the motherboard and plug the Panaflo into a secondary fan connector or when I boot, I get a CPU fan speed error and have to press F1 to continue. I was not aware of this issue when I ordered it, and I will never order another Panaflo. An rpm monitor should be standard with ANY fan, and Panasonic is stupid not to include it.

As for the 90mm fans on 80mm mounts, that is a great thing, but probably is not what Reck is looking for as a solution as the original problem was "wind noise"; a 90mm fan forcing air through a 80mm hole would probably only aggravate the situation.

I didn't realise that Panaflos didn't have RPM monitors either - I wondered what the heck that F1 error was at first.

Sent mine back to FrozenCPU and saw that they do have *one* Panaflo with RPM monitor - see here - http://www.frozencpu.com/fan-87.html

Panaflo fans that have a tach/sensor feed wire have a *BX* at the end of the part number.
Just because a fan *might* have three wires does not mean it has a tach/sensor feed wire.
Some vendors put three wire leads on fans to *trick* us.

You cut the grill out, this is a "good thing".

If I had room at the rear of the case, a 80 to 92 adapter would be installed and a low speed
92mm fan installed externally. Adapter about $3, grill $1, fan $7.

Generally Pans with a tach/sensor feed cost about $10. SVC did have some 92x25 M-BX
Japanaflos for $4, but they are history. The ones offered now are Chinaflos w/o sensor.
