Degenerate ~ the cpu will go plenty further, probably 185fsb if i give it enough voltage. but i think i think im gonna heed my own advise and not go over 1.75v.

175fsb wouldnt finish the benchmarks on 1.75v.
170fsb is what this chip can do on a very reasonable 1.75v.

using 1.75v as an anchor - this chip is 3fsb/48mhz faster than my other one.

(im just glad i dont have to re-swap it out again)

Bobbyeyes ~ the P4B533-VM and the P4B533 are completely different boards. the dipswitch settings are different too. i cant do much of any jumper mode tests. i dont have any voltage control and im not wire modded.

Egrimm ~ with a retail HSF using a retial TIM, i wouldnt go over 1.7v as seen in windows.

BTW: ive been playing Descent3 and Serious Sam

here is my prime95 temps @ 166fsb 1.69v.

room temp = 25*C

CPU idle temp = 28*C
CPU max temp = 44*C

board idle temp = 27*C
board max temp = 29*C

Duvie ~ if thats true, its a smart move on Asus's part

like i said before - this CPU runs alot cooler then my last one!

Damn Thugsrook thats better than @@HALF@@ my temps!!

{edit}

Just checked my system temps. Seems since I re-installed the cpu with a little more AS2 on there the temps have came down a notch. I actually had to little on there. Temps are running ~55c instead of 60-65c!

I've backed down the voltage to 1.675 and so far there's no problems. That it sometimes crashed seems more to be due to my running my Samsung ram at too aggressive cas (it didn't like cas 2 ), I've backed down to the speed-setting to be sure that was the problem.

I bought this setup because I didn't have much money, that's why I use stock hsf and some cheap Titan grease I already had. When I get the money and feel likke playing I'll get a PAL8945 and hopefully it'll then go further.

I've just received 2 1.6a's from Intel, these are RMA replacements from there Kentucky address. I have 1 up and running at 2.4(150fsb) on an undervolted MSI 645 Ultra (1.44v)4:5 mem ratio, Started Prime95 and 3Dmark 2001se last night and both still running this morning. They both have a pack date of 05/17/02, and their FPO/Batch #'s are very close.
My second system has a Soltek 85DRS board witch tops out at 133fsb in the bios, has mem voltage but no vcore adjust. Almost seems a waste for the other cpu. Any suggestions for a P4 board upgrade ? I was also considering trying to swap the second cpu for a higher (1.8a-2.0a)chip and keep the Soltek. Any suggestions ?
Both boards were purchased late last year along with the 1.6a's so there showing there age. I tried swapping cpu's last month and had bad luck getting the stock coolers off with the black tin like coating, i ended up with 1 broken pin on each cpu so hence the RMA's. And again any suggestions would be great

Hey Thugs (& everyone else) -
I just ordered a P4B533 & P4 1.6A from newegg and am hoping to do 2.4 at close to stock voltage (I'm sort of a conservative OCer). I guess even if I don't make it it'll be a big upgrade from the current Celeron 366@550.

Can I bug you with a few simple questions?
- What options are there on the P4B533 to set PCI & AGP speeds? I'd like to just lock them at spec speeds if possible.
- Does this motherboard have any other CPU-memory ratios other than 1:1 and 3:4? Those seem to be the only ones in the manual, but I've seen discussions of 4:5 and 4:6...

I'll report back with results once I have the board. Thanks for all the info folks- this thread and a few others on this board were a really valuable resource in making my decisions.

1) agp/pci is completely user adjustable to any speed.

2) no

----------------------------
as before ive settled my system down @ 167fsb 334ddr 1.72v (12+hours prime95 stable)

as Duvie and i have noticed and mentioned many times before....
"results above 167fsb arent worth the needed extra voltage and heat."

its not really the chips fault or the boards fault - just the nature of overclocking.

so as it turns out i ended up with the same overclock, on .025v less voltage, and a 5*C cooler system.
not bad results concidering i made $ buying a new 1.6A to try out. (sold my other 166er for $169 shipped) :Q (i sold it way too cheap didnt i?)

how do you run your cpus so well?
highest I have achieved is 143 FSB with 1.6 V
The load temperature is already 50.
I don't know how you can run up to 150 FSB at default vcore. What can I do to overclock even more? cpu is pretty new 5/22
I use the same mobo as Thugsrook.
Could it be the USB? or the 2x256 Samsung chip ram?

It is possible that your memory could be holding you back or power supply and other.
What type of Samsung ram are you running? Is it true Samsung, PC2100, PC2700? If you could post, your whole system specs then you might get better information.

When I set up a new system, I load everything before I start bumping the fsb. I have 4 USB devises connected, Zip250, CDRW, 3 HD's, etc, etc.

Try removing 1 ram chip and set the memory in BIOS to run 1:1, then just keep bumping 1mhz on fsb at a time until you find the max that your processor will do at the vcore that you want to run.

Every chip will oc to different speeds, just the luck of the draw. Thugsrook seems to get good ones every time. I hope he is playing the lotto in florida.

Hey superman, how is the noise level of that Volcano compared to the retail heatsink at low speed? what about at medium? Thanks.

at low speed...i can barely hear it...spec say 24dBA...I could hear my PSU fans and case fans more when I have them running...of course i can change my PSU fans so that i don't hear them...
at medium speed...it is there...just a little louder...i think spec say 37dBA...of course when i switch from low to med i can hear the difference...and it is louder than stock HSF...
at high speed...there is actually a whine...but my CPU temp gets pretty low even loading Prime95...around low 40 Cs...sometimes even 40C...that's during PRIME95...spec say 49dBA and max air flow at 47cfm...and it is definitely there when turn on high...it takes out all the noise in my case when set on high

so basically the only thing to look at is removing 1 stick of ram and leaving only 1 in, adust vcore, adjust FSB, try not to use USB for overclocking the cpu if everything else was kept default speeds (not auto).
My ram is not true Samsung, it has the chips but the PCB is not Samsung. It is DDR333 though, and while the data rate is not even close to DDR333 yet at FSB below 160 I wouldn't think the ram is the limiting factor.

One thing, do any of you using aluminum cases smell the aluminum when running cpu at max? I sort of smell something all the time when cpu at max but the temperature of cpu doesn't go above 50C and the mobo stays at 32C.

LOL...mostly my farts...stinks more...
btw...
running temp
cpu idle 30
sys temp 28
room temp 26
cpu load 47 during prime95
low fan speed @3000rpm 24dBA ???cfm
vcore = 1.776 idle and 1.696 load
vmem = 2.6v ddr413.2 3:4 mem ratio cas2.5-3-3-7
fsb155
1.6a@2.48GHz packdate 6/12/2002

while overclocking, i notice that my ram would run in 2-2-2-5 up to ddr280...and when at ddr290...it automatically set to 2.5-3-3-7...i thougth it was suppose to go up to ddr300 before doing that...

i will post this set up benchie tonight when i get home with a few updates...

Astro33~ jhites hit the nail right on the head.

just follow my thread - everything is pretty much spelled out for you. look for differences between our 2 setups as to reasons why mine overclocks farther.

i am 1 lucky SOB tho. dont think 166fsb is as easy as the thread makes it sound. there are only 7 "known" ppl on AT running @ 166+fsb on decent voltage.

SupermanCK ~ so the cas lock is at 290ddr? i thought it was 300 (board revisions?)

Astro33,
One other thing is what "thermal interface" you're using. Are you using the thermal pad that came with your P4 or some thermal grease like ASIII? If you're using the thermal pad that came with it, then that could be a limiting factor.
