I have a PC shop, and for super budget light gamers, I have been recommending the $30ish GF6200s, as they will play stuff like Enemy Territory, World of Warcraft, etc, on mediumish settings at low resolutions, as well as play video very well indeed. Obviously if someone has more $$ and is so inclined, I push them towards X1900 series or 7600GT, etc.

What I want to know, is where the new Nvidia 8500 falls into the scheme of things .. any ideas?

Damn wonder why this card is so hard to get performance info on? If the price drops to $50-$60 at newegg in a couple of months, but it runs like a 7600GS/X1650Pro, then it would make a great budget media/gaming card for folks around here.

Any benchies yet? Sorta pissed me off to read through the Anandtech "DX10 for the Masses: NVIDIA 8600 and 8500 Series Launch" article that had ZERO info/benches on the 8500s

It looks like Nvidia didn't ship out any 8500's for reviewing. No one is going to have a review until they can buy one.

I'm wondering if there will be any passively cooled 8500GT's... I am planning to build a quiet computer (won't be for gaming). Most likely I'll have to wait for RV610/630 since those will be 65nm.

It would be good if they were passive - afterall, they have similar clock speeds to the 7600GS , so even with extra shaders would be able to be cooled passively.

True. It looks like MSI never released any passively cooled 7600GS cards so maybe some of the other manufacturers will once they catch up.

Regardless, I'm going to wait to see what RV610/630 bring before buying.

I had an Evga passive-cooled PCIe 7600GS, and it was *very* nice for gaming on my old 19" ViewSonic 1440x900 LCD, but when I got my 22", I needed to jump to a faster card. It would be nice if the 8500GT was at least 7600GT speeds, but ???? who knows

MSI has a passive 7600GS, so does XFX.

According to the distributors of MSI cards here, the HDMI versions of 8500/8600 will be available in June. That includes the low profile, passive 8500GT.

In the meantime, you can consider the Asus EN8500GT Silent w/ passive heatsink. I saw passive versions of 8600GT and 8600GTS on the MSI Global website too.

It appears the 8600 and 8500 are not so much for gaming as for home entertainment with of course M$ controls over the gpu now almost fully implemented, hence the "86" in the name. For gaming.. an 8800 is the way to go... and from price indications.. just a few weeks until we see the 8800 GTS with 640 MB for around $300 which is a much better deal then these cards.
