I have a brand new system that has 2 7800 gtx in SLI, DVD Drive, DVD DL Burner, Soundblaster 2 ZS, 4800+ Dual Core X2 AMD, Nforce 4 Asus motherboard, 4 GB DDR2 RAM XMS CORSAIR (1024mbx4), 2 10k 72 gb raptors in a raid and I am adding 2 500gb hitachi 7k500 16mb cache drives in a raid for a TB of storage as my storage drive (the raptors are my system). Right now I have a 510w power and cooling PSU, is it enough. My first week of my system my motherboard blew (after market builder warrantied it and is sending a new one out and a tech to replace it). But I am wondering if 510W (I think 650 peak - 510 steady) is enough? I saw the 850W from them (480$ - expensive, but so is my whole system). Is 510 enough? I do very high-end gaming (maxed out) and do graphical software (maya and 3ds max), so my computer will be running hot (oh and that reminds me there is several fans). Thanks.

Depends on the brand. If the 510 (or 650) is by a quality maker (Fortron, Seasonic) it would be enough. Perhaps more than enough.

the 7800 gtx uses less power than the 6800 ultra, so i say the 510 is fine. is it a good 510?

Eh, let him do it. GH is full of threads by people who spent all day on Newgg finding parts they'll never buy.

Unless you are being super picky... whats wrong with raid0? (then again it is still considered a part of RAID)

Sorry this is funny. Becareful of what you say it may bite you in the ass (or asshat as such). 500GB x2 in Stripe or RAID 0 = 1000GB or commonly known as 1TB.

Sounds like he's talking about PC P&C powersupplies.

If you actually do have this system, the powersupply should be plenty for that.

I am not full of crap or "lengthening" my E-dick?! I may have made a mistake. I had Alienware put this together for me. I do High-end gaming and Maya/3DS max?Vegas editing/etc. When I did put it together they told me that they had no higher PSU and that it was enough, even when I told them I was adding the two other drives (they don't stock it yet). I just got it a week ago and already the Motherboard is done and they are shipping a new one out. Now the guy with Technical support says maybe the PSU is not enough. Can that be what happened to the Motherboard, or maybe it happened in shipping. Don't know. I am adding 2 500gb drives that are shipping as we speak from compudirect. I didn't want to receive hate and some other seem to be showing their E-dicks not me, I am here...expressing I am ignorant to the definitive answer and asking for help...that's it. I appreciate those that answered thoughtfully and respectfully. If I made a mistake, maybe its the Videocard that is DDR2 I don't know...it is XMS Corsair 1024 mb sticks of RAMx4. Thanks for those that have posted.

Oh the PSU is PC Power & Cooling 510 Deluxe and now they are telling me that they have a 660 watt PSU (I belive for the ALX though they didn't list it or tell me about it for mine) if I ship the computer back (they'd put the motherboard back in then too instead of shipping it out)...but I would eat the cost of a brand new PSU (1 week old). I feel pissed if it is not enough that they didn't tell me this originally. That is why I want a definitive answer. If somebody knows a real world calculation it'd be great.

Oh and yes I may not be computer genius, but 2 x 500gb is math I can do and that is in fact 1 terabyte, which for digital video editing and 3D content creation is necessary for me.

Why so much hate?????? This is definitely not the response I assumed I'd get. I am not getting the answers I want from Alienware (which I was trying to leave out namewise) and I was hoping to get help here. I don't care about pissing contests. This computer is for me, not to instill envy in anyone...I couldn't give a sh*t about that. I just want help. I want my computer that is a huge investment to be stable and not crash or possibly ruin more parts (if thats in fact what happened).

Thanks

Now the money, I wasted, will be the next series of posts...

Maybe so, again, I am ignorant about building computers, but am knowledgeable about what they can do and I do very well in business using mine. I also have wasted gobs of money on star wars, whether my wife likes it or not and am a big fan. So please, please, just help me and not criticize or hate.

No, the 850W PSU IS DEFINITELY NOT ENOUGH! You need dual 850W PC Power and Cooling PSU's with redudency. Also, you need to have liquid nitrogen cooling because Alienware computers are really hot. So you have to spend $123,780,212, or else your computer will get destroyed in the first week.

Okay, in all seriousness, why the heck are you spending $6000+ on a computer... I'd rather have a crappy car and a like $2000 computer You seem to not have a clue about computers, as you tried to pair an X2 with DDR2 RAM... Do some research before you buy/build. Alienware is really overpriced. Just buy the parts and build it yourself. Most importantly though, do a lot of research. Don't waste your money.
