the 510 should be fine. hard drives don't eat up that much power. the mobo likely was just a bad one.

Is there anyone who can help me, that would speak to me, with some level of respect. I did what I did, I don't regret it, I have the money to do it, I am not mad about it, I just don't want my computer crapping out on me and I am sorry I mistyped something...wow. I am certainly, again, not a genius computer builder. Again, that is why I need help...otherwise I'd know the answer. The fact I have got some conflicting answers is why I ask.

The list of the configuration is not to be laughed at or be envious of, its so that an amount of power can be assessed, especially given the graphically intensive work and play I do.

Thanks El Fenix!!!!! I appreciate that. (Are you a big Fenix TX fan?? I love them)

The computer has been bought already, stop making the guy feel bad..

Now Alienware should have tested the system and should not have shipped it if it didn't work correctly... I believe they stress test and benchmark every computer they send out to make sure all is fine, so in their environment the computer did work... I do believe a 510W power supply is on the lower side for that computer though, maybe it just worked too hard... I'd go for like 600W or, if you can afford it, the 850W they have to offer.

I do wonder why they didn't offer you the 850W at first. I think it's partly their fault for delivering the system without making sure everything worked fine.

With that computer you should be set for quite a few years...

That's what I had hoped, and I wanted to not be opening the case every year. Hence, my initial comfort in getting something very high-end, meanwhile 1 week later I got the case open, pulling the battery off the board, moving the jumper, pulling out both Videocards and the SLI bridge and pulling stuff off the board (switching the ram I think around from dual to single)...God. Alienware does not have the 850W, I saw it on a couple of articles and it has great reviews. They do have a 660W that wasn't listed in my system's configurator, but I think maybe available for the ALX, but when I was talking to the tech he told it would work with my system.

Thanks PsychoCow.

Nice computer dude. It's a lot of money but yours to spend as you like. Most things in life aren't worth what they cost except to the person doing the purchasing. I think the psu you have should be fine. I'd keep it for now, and if you have another problem where you suspect the psu, replace it then. Alienware will eat the cost under warranty and you'll save the bucks if your psu's fine.

Hrm I got 566 lol

I dinno, it's on the outside edge probally. BUT

If you get you Comp backtogether and it runs, your good.

See if you PSU blew you MOBO, that means that one of the capacitors or something else in the psu blew, thus it will either smell horrible, or not put out enough power to boot the system. Dont forget dude, not every mobo is good to go, thats why we have warentees.

Good luck and let us know!!

I probably forgot something then

shawn, I don't know if you'd be into this idea, but a Seasonic 600watt would be a very affordable option compared to PC P&C and would get the job done.

(that is if this is really a PSU issue)

EDIT: 83% efficiency under a 600watt load http://www.silentpcreview.com/article247-page4.html

Sorry this is funny. Becareful of what you say it may bite you in the ass (or asshat as such). 500GB x2 in Stripe or RAID 0 = 1000GB or commonly known as 1TB.

raid 0 that is how

will all that loaded in there, yeah you maybe stresing that power supply a little bit. Wouldn't hurt to srping for a 850 if you have the money.
damn that is an insance rig

i'm pretty sure that a 7800 gtx averages 150 idle and 250 on heavy load...so no, it's not enough.

Alright well if we're gonna be serious, I think you should talk to Alienware about their warranty. Because that 510W PSU is as good as gone once you get into the intensive workstation apps and games. If you can, try to get that 510W upgraded to 600W or so. That should DEFINITELY be enough.

IMPORTANT : Make sure there are at LEAST 26A coming from the 12V rail on the PSU. Ask Alienware about that also.

I feel pissed if it is not enough that they didn't tell me this originally. That is why I want a definitive answer. If somebody knows a real world calculation it'd be great.

Oh and yes I may not be computer genius, but 2 x 500gb is math I can do and that is in fact 1 terabyte, which for digital video editing and 3D content creation is necessary for me.

Shawn

the PCP&C 510 is enough.

For sure in the top 10 best PSU's on the market.

The only thing else i'd consider would be a Zippy.

The power supply _IS_ quality, but 510W may not be enough for this system.

The PSU calculator linked previously recommends me a 589W for this rig - that's before taking into account extra fans and lights if there are any, as well as PCI devices if there are any present.

110W for the CPU
250W for the video cards
40W for the RAM
90W for the two 15k rpm drives
26W for the two upcoming SATA drives
25W for the DVDRW
5W for the floppy

That's without taking into account the mobo itself (site says 40 watts) ; 546W. I don't know how accurate these Watts value are, but if they represent what each part of the system needs under load, it may hurt the PSU when everything goes under load for too long.

This is just a guess, but that's the first part I suspect.

sue alienware (4 JUAN MILLIEN DALLERRRSSS) becasue they sent you a system that can be barely supported by the psu, and im sure they were aware of this. next time you purchase anything related to computers, best bet is to buy something a generation behind the latest.

I'm all for you buying it, but there are other ways to get that kind of performance and you are a mad man!

Congrats on the PC. Here is my take on it...PC Power and cooling PSU's are the best on the market and the 510 should be ok, however if it were me, I would bump it up to the 850 for peace of mind. While there is a good chance the 510 will function great in handling the power demands of your set-up, I would still air on the side of caution and go for the best (because thats obviously what you did when configuring the system). Just my .02 Good luck.
