Until someone blind sides you the second you touch the ball. I would stand there and smack it out of his hands the second he touched it. He would have to pick it up and then kneel down for it to be down. I don't think you are considered down if you are on the ground when you retrieve a ball... hence receivers getting up and running after they make a diving catch.

I know this because I played high school football and as a linemen I missed my one shot at a touch down because of this. I picked up a fumble and I took off running for the end zone but the play was called back because the ref said my knee touched the ground when I picked up the ball. It was the saddest day of my life. Linemen dream about that moment, and it was taken away from me. :'(

The problem is though : can you gain possession in the time it takes for the 4 guys around you to tackle you? Sure, in your mind, it's easy to snatch the ball up and grasp it to prevent being stripped, but in reality when you have a group around you ready to pounce, it's not so easy. The rule is possession with a knee down, not a few fingers on the ball with a knee down, so the ball would likely still be active even if you knelt down and tried scooping it up.
