I have $70 or less to spend and I can get a new 8600gt or 7600gt for that. which is better between the 2 models of 8600gt? At what price point should I consider a 7600gt instead

Here are a couple of 8600GT DDR3 cards for less than $70:

MSI

XFX

I have seen a review in which 512 DDR2 is compared to 256 DDR3 in the 8600GT, but can't find it for you. I remember that 256 DDR3 was always ahead in performance.

At the price the 8600GT is selling now, it's not worth going with a 7600GT anymore, unless budget becomes the main concern and you could find a DDR3 version for, let's say, less than $50.

8600 GT DDR3 is the best choice. But remember that this is a very bad card for gaming.

Its not bad if you don't need max graphics or you're playing anything not demanding.

I ended up getting a 8600GT 512MB Gddr3 msi card from Newegg with free Witcher game for $85 after rebate

for me 8600gt is perfectly fine. all my games aren't very demanding. Lots of the reviews at newegg say they can play Crysis with this card with 25-27fps.

Trust Newegg review's with a very small grain of salt, lots of people like to spread misinformation, not that i ain't saying that 8600GT can't get 25-27FPS in Crysis, just warning you.

Maybe they can play Crysis with it on low settings, using 800X600 resolution.

My HD 2600XT can run Crysis on Medium @ 1280x720 with 20-35FPS.... you are obviously biased against anything below your 8800/HD 3800/whatever you have in performance.

No I'm not biased, but I really don't think you are having so many frames per second with your card in Crysis. I do own a 8800 GT though, but it always struggled in Crysis on medium, high or whatever. It never played smooth so how could a 2600XT with 256 mb on 128 bits can do the trick?

8600 and crysis: now that's depressing.

NEVER exclude the possibility that your card doesn't work perfectly, also, did you update your drivers? Installed the patches? That might help a good deal ifg your card isn't a junky one.

Your doubts are well-founded but wrong nevertheless. A 8600GT can play Crysis fine at 1024x768 high settings or crank it up to 1280x1024 on medium settings, sure this is averaging around 20-25FPS but Crysis is completely playable at these settings.

I exclude the possibility that my card doesn't work perfectly.I've used the patches and a couple of nvidia drivers and played it on both XP and Vista. I know when a card is defective, believe me. Is just that Crysis is very demanding and almost every card out there struggles with it. So the point is, don't try to make me look in another way because I know you don't have those fps. Don't trust the time demo that the game has, do your own measurements and you will see that you are way under 35 fps with your XT. I know that because I had a 7600 GT which is a bit under your card and it didn't manage to play the game even on low and in 800X600.

Well I've tested it myself on a MacBook Pro (has a 8600M GT), I overclocked the card (since Apple and mobile GPUs in general are severly underclocked) and could play Crysis fine at 1024x768 high settings, I didn't actually measure the FPS but they were playable so I guess they must have been a little over 20 (which is perfectly fine for my tastes in this particular game), I don't have the machine in question anymore, just my old MBP with a X1600. I was using a highly optimized XP installation (without AV and hardly any running programs) so I wouldn't think a Vista machine filled with junk would work the same.

In any case, techpowerup has a similar benchmark if you are disinclined to believe me but for some reason techpowerup Crysis figures are surprisingly higher for any other card that most review sites so I don't know what their benchmark practice is.

I'm using an 8600GT 256MB DDr3 with an E6750 at stock and can run Crysis alright, at 1024x1028 I can play on medium, with maybe (never looked at actual numbers) 15-20 FPS. It's playable.

high settings for non core2 cpu users? NO. medium settings at 1024x768 is playable until after the core level then its all low for the snow and carrier levels. with a good core2 duo you could probably put most of the settings on high at 1024x768. regardless of what people "think" Crysis is very cpu demanding below 1280x1024.

Ok, our dispute doesn't really help the op in any way. Maybe Crysis is playable at medium to high settings on 8600 GT or X2600XT. Maybe I was wrong.

I had a 8600gts. It's a little faster than 8600gt. Crysis medium was all that it could muster @ 1440x900. High settings was out of the question unless 800x600. 1024 if you like 15fps average and I was running a core 2 duo @ 3.05ghz.

Crysis is video card limited not CPU limited.

IT IS CPU LIMITED AT 1280X1024 OR BELOW. your own link shows that a fast core2 cpu will nearly DOUBLE the framerate over an AMD cpu at 1024x768. below 1280 with my comp I would get a bigger increase in fps by going with a fast core2 cpu than going with a faster card and thats a fact. I used an 8800gt for two weeks and it only made 5 fps difference(from 31 to 36fps) at 1024 over my 8600gt.
