8600GTS a good choice?

I had $109 credit at newegg. Couldnt add anything to it, and couldnt take into account any rebates (RMA'd a now discontinued 256mb 7600GT).

I chose a 8600GTS

Figured I could OC it a bit when i get it, then down the road pick up a better cooler and overclock it further.

Stupid is a harsh word... But if I had a 109 credit, I would have ponied up the extra 60 bucks or so and went for a 9600GT.

The 9600GT is about 3X the card of the 8600GTS and it is only 50% more money... Something to think about.

I guess the 9600 GT is about 10 times faster then the 8600 GTS. The GTS doesn't worth it even if you manage to double its clocks. Try getting some ATI 3850 or anything better then this, but please, make yourself a favor and don't buy one of the worst graphic cards that Nvidia made.

If its cause of newegg.. then I guess you got the best card they sell for the money but if not.. its not really a good choice at all
when an 8800gs can be had for ~130.

If indeed you are really locked into only spending 109 dollars precisely and you do not have access to +100 dollars then here is what I suggest.

Buy an eVGA 8600GT and overclock the hell out of it.

Then when you get 100 or so dollars Step up~!

This is a sweet card too. Not too much far off 9600gt. I wonder if you can unlock the core and memory controller. This is basically 8800gt with 1/4 of the card disabled.

or the 8600gts. i would lean towards the 3650 b/c it's a newer architecture, but I haven't seen a 3650's performance compared to an 8600gts so you might want to do some research first.

the msi diamond plus with free witcher is a great deal... i get 6200 3d06 oc'd to 852/2300 (msi's dual core util lets u push up the voltages) and it plays crysis @720p medium with a 2180 oc'd to 2.5ghz...

they have another 8600gts that has 2 dvi and is factory oc'd to 700 over the diamond's 665... but the diamond has a hdmo out and comes with hdmi cable, and there's no lag with the hdmi cable attached to my bigscreen playing games (like with my 8800's)... both 8600's are 2 slot cards with a nice big heatpipe cooler... u can actually run the thing with the fan turned off if u aren't gaming, their util has a silence mode that turns down the voltages and clocks and stops the fan...

for the price of these right now it redeems the 8600 series as a viable option. for my 'kids freinds' pc's that i have so the neighborhood kids can lanparty at my house they are fine... and i can double them up in my sli board down the road...

at the list price there's no doubt that these where a horrible value...

Ok i overreacted a "bit", but we must admit that the 9600 GT is way better then any 8600 card.
The FX series were awful cards just like these 8600, but maybe worse. For me the 8600 series as long with the HD 2600 from ATI, are cards that can't do anything with current games so they shouldn't be bought at all.
If you do only some slight gaming or you just use your computer for playing movies and music, then yes, a 8600 card would worth the money. If you want to play some serious games then aim higher and spend some little more money.

Go the extra yard and get the 8800GS or the 9600GT, trying to save as much money as possible to the point where you can't get a decent graphics card (don't expect miracles around the <$100 price point) isn't exactly the wisest thing to do if your priority is to game. The extra $50-75 will go you a LONG way.

Agreed. I played through COD4 on high settings with AA at 1280 wide with my old Asus 8600GTS. Never got choppy.

I'm nearly as a big of a gamer as I used to be. Currently I am just playing WoW on my old AGP 9500pro PC until the new card gets here. Then I'm working my way through bioshock. After that I plan on going stalker -> the witcher -> CoD4 -> knights of the old republic -> ??

Do you think that the 8600GTS can fair >30 fps in these games?

He says that because it works maxed out on UT3 (and possibly other games) at 1280x1024 (i wouldnt call that low resolution per say) maxed out, that it isnt "good for nothing" e.g. worthless.

I have a HD 2600XT,i can run Crysis on Medium @ 1280x720 with 25-35FPS Average,i'm sure 8600GT can get similar results,and on Medium doesn't look THAT bad.

The point is: why settle for bad when an extra $50 will nearly double your performance. The deal is even made sweeter that Newegg gave you store credit, so the amount of in-pocket money you spend is also a lot less.

The 9600, 3850. 3870, and hell, if you can get the 8800GT >>>>> 8600GT.

Didn't he JUST say that he "couldn't add anything to it"?

Anyways, for around $100 the 8600GTS is a decent card and a pretty nice card for gaming at 1280x1024.

I have a 8600GTS and I can play UT3 @ 1280x1024 on a 19" LCD with world detail maxed and I get 35-62 FPS. Some maps it pins the game at 62 FPS but UT3 is capped but you can change that in the .ini file. Depends on your CPU also, if you have a C2D 6xxx series you'll be fine. It's a good card if you're playing games @ 1280x1024. It also blows through my older games without a problem at much higher frame rates with everything maxed with AF and AA enabled.

Uh no,HD 3650 GDDR2 is worse than 8600GTS,only ones worth getting are the GDDR3.
