2720mhz 170fsb 3:4 452DDR . . . 12376 . . . 273.8 . . . 3403 / 3249
Sweet spot....Mmmmmmm sweet spot That's a bada$$ chip you have there.

Yeah that's a heck of a jump in memory scores over 180fsb. But fsb is where it's at for 3DMark, look at that friggin score!! OMG!:Q

it just seems that DDR increases raise performance quite linearly with increases in FSB.

To assess performance, all one needs to do is add the DDR MHz with the clock speed in MHz.

Combinations with the highest total will provide best performance. This seems obvious but what is interesting is that there seems to be an incredible number of possible combinations for each performance 'standard'. With more cpu/dram ratios, we could discover all these combinations. Someday, maybe someone will make boards capable of handling 1 MHz adjustments to RAM.

eg.

2720 MHz and 452 MHz DDR translates to 3172 MHz total
this should perform similarly to a:
2880 MHz and 292 MHz DDR
2772 MHz and 400 MHz DDR
etc.

below, we can also see that:
2560mhz 160fsb 3:4 426DDR total MHz: 2986
2655mhz 166fsb 1:1 332DDR total MHz: 2987

which adds up since they have similar real world results.

just my two cents. i obviously had a little too much fun with thugsrook's results

edit: now of course, this would only be true with a particular setup, since no two chips of RAM are equivalent.
That is, RAM chip 1 may hit DDR400 at fast settings while RAM chip 2 can only hit DDR333 at fast settings.
So total MHz wouldn't be a good way to assess performance between machines. Simply a quick way of working out the best overclocking parameters.

Top notch research again from thugs...I think you are confirming some of my results...

Notice about 80-100mhz more of cpu speed can counteract 100mhz deficit in memory speed...Ie while I find running 2.74ghz with 342mhz ddr cas 2 is better then my system at 2.64ghz with 440mhz ddr...

Also I have noticed with my board at those speeds 440mhz ddr needs more vcore then the just plain higher c,lock speed.

all good info....

I did the as2 on the chipset...

need to do the fan though, I agree...

Havent messed with pci latency either.

Maybe that's one of the reasons I gotta bit more oc room, cause of the as3 on the chipset and running it in for a few weeks...I need to try a fan...

With the high fsb, how does the pci bus fair? I have a P4B266, 1.6a and right now I have it at 132, 4:5 ratio. As I understand it, if I go above 132 the memory speed drops off unless I do the jumper mode trick. Does the P4B266 have a 1/5 divider or do I need a different board for that. And how is the memory speed figured? I'm use to the AMD stuff and just trying to figure this intel stuff out.

Very intresting. I wish my memory was as good as yours. I only have XMS2700. I am running a 1.8A at fsb133 (2400mhz) gand DDR 353. I only have the 2.0x or the 2.66x ratios so if I want to go much higher on the fsb I will have to go down to the 2.0x (1:1) ratio. Sorta annoying since I have a 845G mb and had though I was going to get the 4/5 ratio but apparently it only comes up if I have a real "B" chip. I sorta like my current setup because I am only OCing each piece 33%. But from these results it looks like I might be better off going down to maybe DDR300 at 150fsb if I could manage it. I so id be underclocking the mem and ocing the CPU my 50%.

How good a performance indicator is 3DM2k1? Because it seems to just care about fsb, where the memory bench obviously just tests the memory speed.

Obviously the holy grail of benchmarks would be something that took it all into account for the real world. But does anyone have any personal feelings about where the "sweet spot" is for running a 1.8A chip with PC2700 memory?

Thugs, no offense but 3DMark 2001 SE and Quake 3 are only good indicators of performance when overclocking, and trying to decide which FSB/Mem speed is best for you. For comparing processor speeds and system speeds, they are becoming old (quake 3 is) and 3DMark 2001 SE isn't a good indicator of real world gaming performance at all. Everyone knows that there are many ways to "tweak" your 3dmark score and boost it up immensely, and there are so many different variables that go into a 3dmark score that it is highly unreliable.

well the scores are just relative to your own...if you want to tweak it, it is entirely depened upon yourself...thug posted all this just to give us more info on how a system acts toward certain programs or anything close related to it...it is just a reference to us lazy people who won't do so much tweaking and test...

thanks again thugs

Sudheer Anne ~ where does the word tweak come in here?
i already mentioned these scores werent tweaked.

3dm2k1 and Q3 are no good huh?
i suppose i shouldnt be using 3dm2k either?

perhaps you should have said what YOU think is good insted of crappin in my thread.

oh btw: where are your threads at???

:disgust:

I agree with you Thugs, both your methods and the tools you use, and I appreciate the work you've put into this, it's helped me immensely. I haven't seen any posts to contradict your findings, have you? Thanks...

Sudheer Anne, it would be cool if you could give us something to back up your opinions...

THUGS, I agree. I have been reading your threads for awhile now, between you and Duvie[/b], I personally feel that you give out the best info for us intel guru's. Thanks!
