They play this dumb commercial all the time here in NYC. I can't stand it, yet my wife sings along to it every time it is on... *rolls eyes*
I don't know whether it's to annoy me or if she actually likes it.
And that's why it's brilliant! Damn near everyone I know has an opinion on the commercial. Some hate it, others love it, but either way, they all know the phone number!! That's marketing genius on par with Bose.
Exactly. Consumers measure the effectiveness of advertising by how much they like the commercial. Marketers measure the effectiveness of advertising by how effective it is at generating business. Like it or not, those really annoying commercials stick in your head, which causes you to remember the brand, the number, etc.
There was a commercial on the radio in Portland for years (actually, it's still on, but they changed it). It's just a man, speaking, in a monotone voice, about diamonds. By the end of the commercial, you're just about falling asleep, which is bad because the only time you listen to the radio is when you're driving, and you find yourself singling along to the advertisement, "Open Monday through Friday til 8, Saturday and Sunday til 5..." And then you realize that you'magically driven to Scholl's Ferry Road, across from highway 217, even though you have no interest in buying diamonds. What the hell is up with that?
Advertising that annoys the hell out of you can be effective if it gets you to remember something specific (in this case, the phone number). It's stupid, but it works.
