so i just got done playing about 3 hours of COD4 and i decided to check my GPU temp after i got done... 81C!! wow that seems HOT... its an 8800 ssc and im running it at default speeds....

i dunno if thats normal but 180 degrees seems blazing! oddly enough though my case temp only climbed to about 35C so it seems circulation in the case was good...

Not sure what to say... other than post in the other 10 threads about 8800 series heat generation? Seems like I see these posts every day. ;x

Yes it runs hot, reason being it does not have it's own slot cooler. They can run hot, else they would have a slot cooler.

I dont consider 81*C hot, but that is just my opinion.

If that temp bothers you then use RivaTuner to increase the fan speed.

My 2900XT touches 88*C and that is with the leaf blower fan at 85%.

yeah turns out there is a bug in the NVIdia drivers that causes the fan to not spin up under load... sounds like you have to use RivaTuner in order to get your fans to spin properly...

My GTX gets up to around 85ºC under load too. My X1800XT is the same. Also the ICH on my Intel DP35DP motherboard rises up to 90ºC. I don't like it, but the chip engineers think this is ok.

Using RT, I set the fan at 80%, and idle at 41 and 56 under load. I have not OC'd yet, so that will change.

With the wattage being used to power the card, the heat generation potential should be obvious

That's not an unsafe temperature though.

I use Rivatuner to put my fan speed at 100% for my GTX's. Despite what most people say, I can't even hear it. Card #1 idles at 58C-60C and loads at 64-66C; card #2 idles at 51C-54C and loads at 58-60C.

How does one check the temperature of the card? I have an 8800 GT OC that is very hot...to the touch But my monitor keeps shutting off when i load a game. Just curious, thought i'd check the temp.

Bug? I thought it was a feature? and I'm not trying to be a smartass. Mine spins up to 35% max when under load and I was under the impression that this was intentional, just to keep the noise levels down. Currently using Rivatuner 2.06 like most people and have my fan set at 60%.

Personally, I use Expertool 5.6 and with my core clock overclocked to 700MHz and my memory to 1000MHz, the temperature usually never exceeds 80 C as long as I have the fan turned to 100% for both 2D and 3D applications. The highest I've seen the card is around 92 C, and that was before changing the fan speeds. I got Expertool here:

I just read a quote from an eVGA tech support guy and he said the card is designed to operate at over 100 c GPU temp! O.M.G.

I use Rivatuner to put fan at 75% and running at 720/1750/1900 and avg temp was 65 with stock cooler -- so very pleased.

yeah after i got riva tuner installed and working right (so that the fan kicks up as temps rise) the temps stayed a lot lower... i think it was 68 C after playing COD4 for about 8 hours. But i did hear the fan kicking up to audible levels a few times...

I'm pretty noob at overclocking or using tools like Rivatuner to tune a graphics card.

I downloaded Rivatuner, how does one go about increasing fan speed, as my 8800GT idles around 60 and loads at 85-90C after a few minutes in Crysis, which indicates I may have been stricken with buggy Nvidia drivers and auto-fan speed.

Preferably, I would have the card as quiet as possible whilst idling, but the fan increases to maybe 50-75%, maybe 100% under extreme load, as I don't really mind noise emanating from my computer due to where it's placed on my desk. Can you do this using Rivatuner?

I'm using Rivatuner 2.06, thanks for the guide. However, I can't find a way to control 2D fan control and low-level 3D fan control; those options are greyed out. The only fan control I can change is performance 3D, which is good for gaming, but I don't want to wear the fan out whilst idling, does anyone know how to individually control each fan setting using Rivatuner 2.06?

OK, it's roughly 24C in my room right now. I have a P182 with the 3 included 120mm tricools on low, an Arctic Cooling AF12025 120mm fan in the top front cage, and my X2 3800+ @ 2.7 has an XP-90 w/ Arctic Cooling 92mm fan on it. With the RivaTuner fan control @ 40% my BFG 8800GTOC is idling at 61C and load during the ATITool artifact test reaches 108C after 15 min. I removed the factory thermal compound on the core, applied Ceramique, and it didn't seem to make a difference. Did I get a dud?

This is why I always (so far) have gotten an aftermarket cooler. Lower temps and quieter. In my mind, I add the price of decent cooling before I buy.

I figure the video card may survive the temps, but not so sure of other hardware in that hot box.
