8800 GT worse than 7900 GS

I just got a brand new BFG 8800 GT OC but unfortunately it looks like crap:frown: My 7900 GS looks great on the same system. The colors of the 8800 GT are muted and washed out, the text is blurred and the desktop/windows appearance looks terrible, even at monitor's native resolution of 1920x1200. The icons are not crisp; when options are highlighted in XP the letters are surrounded by a white glow. I have uninstalled/reinstalled driver twice now and have reseated the card, but no luck so far. I left the settings on the monitor how I had them for the 7900 GS and I have tried to tweak them for the 8800, but I cant get it to look any better either way.

Let me know what you guys think. If it is defective, I will try to return to Best Buy ASAP.

If you're talking about difference in 2d image quality, yes variation can happen. Difference is personally opinionated so I can't comment, but if you feel that quality degraded so much, try exchanging the card. There always is a chance that item is broken

Connection to my monitor is via Monster cable DVI --> HDMI cable. 2d image quality is far inferior right now and I cant figure out why. . .

I had a number of goofy issues going between a 7900GS and an 8800GTX in the past (although none with 2D) that I couldn't solve by using the NVIDIA uninstaller. I ultimately solved all my issues by grabbing Driver Sweeper from Guru3d.com, running it in safe mode, and installing the newest drivers from NVIDIA for the 8-series card. The drivers for Vista 8-series and 7-series are different, not sure if that is the case with XP.

When going from 5,6,7 series Nvidia cards to an 8 series, you need to run a driver cleaner/sweeper program to remove all traces of previous drivers. 8 series cards are a different animal. Unless there is something wrong with your new card, you should not be noticing such a degradation in 2d quality. Not at all.

I am using the 169.21 forceware driver. I uninstalled, booted into safe mode, used driver sweeper, and reinstalled, but still have the same problems. Ironically, after reboot, I didnt experience any of these problems when the standard windows driver was used for display. . . but unfortunately I would lose hardware acceleration and defeat the purpose of the brand new card. Any other ideas? Could the card be defective? If so, I am very willing to return and try this all again, but I dont want to do that unless I have exhausted my other remedies. Thanks guys.

Do you have any other DVI cables? Even try analog if you can. I can't be certain over an internet forum, but unless you are doing something really wrong, you may have to RMA.

Thanks for all the input. But was definitely the card. I exchanged it at Best Buy for a new one today and all of the problems are solved!
