8800 gts driver will not install on Vista Ultimate?

Hey guys,

I built my new system yesterday and I've ran across something strange that has never happened to me before.

After putting the parts together and booting up the machine, I installed Windows Vista Ultimate. Vista installed the generic 8800gts video drivers for me (of course I dont want those) so I downloaded the 162.22 driver from nVidia. I uninstalled the generic drivers, restarted, installed the newest one from nVidia. But, the newest drivers are not recogonized, it is still using the generic video driver provided by vista.

I have used several different sources for the driver, the CD from my video manufacture, and directly from nVidia.com but nothing seems to work. I even reformatted but that didnt fix the problem either. Does anyone have any advice? I've found similar problems on google with evga video cards but nothing with any concrete help. I'd appreciate any help that you could provide.

My system is as follows:

  • ASUS P5N32-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
    Foxconn FV-N88SMBD2-ONOC GeForce 8800GTS 640MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16
    OCZ GameXStream OCZ600GXSSLI ATX12V 600W Power Supply
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor Model
    Patriot eXtreme Performance 2GB DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
    Western Digital Raptor X WD1500AHFD 150GB 10,000

Thanks again for any help, I greatly appreciate it.

How do you know it uses the generic drivers? I simply installed ntune, and checked what drivers it said were installed, and voila, it said the drivers I just installed, actually were installed, and then I simply assumed they are being used?

The reason I think this is because
1. My vista scoring is only a 1, it does not run any of the aero graphics.
2. When I go to device manager and view the driver it says its v7.5 when I clearly have been trying to install the newest 162.22

Can you dualboot into XP ? It's a weird problem, kinda sounds like your videocard isn't working at all. It works fine for me btw, in Vista Ultimate. Did you perhaps try booting in save mode ? Tbh, I don't have a clue. Go to the configuration screen, system, device management? Does it say something when you select the videocard?

I uninstalled the driver, booted into safe, installed the newest and when I rebooted it was still the same ole generic video driver. I havent tried to dual boot only because I havent installed vista.

In the device manager everything is shown to be working fine. The only problem is its the older driver from 2/10/2007. I have noooo idea why it wont take the newer one.

Yes, I have tried this as well.

This is so strange to me. Here is a link to an exact problem but with an EVGA card instead of mine.

Any ideas?

So, after two weeks (vacationing in Vegas!) I finally received my new card after RMA'ing my last one. I decided to start things fresh so I formatted my HDD and re-installed vista x64. Again I am having the same problems! I have contacted the manufacture but they have not responded yet. I am hoping someone might be able to provide any other clues for me. I am starting to get a bit annoyed at the whole situation.

Thanks for the help and sorry to have to bring this thread back to life! > <

Hi Dann,

I had the same problem with my computer running Vista Ultimate 32. Try installing the international version of Forceware. UK version here.

Before installing, make sure you uninstall any other versions of forceware using control panel. You may be surprised to find it in your programs and features menu even though the driver is not being detected. Then boot into safe mode and delete any Nvidia folders named "winvista", empty your Windows/Temp folder and empty your recycle bin. Then reboot into safe mode and install the driver.

If you encounter any problems in the uninstall process that is more likely to be your problem than the driver. In that case, keep rebooting and uninstalling until it goes right. If finally worked for me on uninstall attempt number 5.

I tried this, twice. It didnt work out, not sure what else to do, I have tried variations of this install over 10 times now.

*** SOLUTION ***

Install the motherboard chipset drivers.
Fixed my '1' rating.

HTH!
This seemed like a great solution but it still didnt work .. =(
I am not completely stupid when it comes to computers but I feel completely stupid right now. I have no idea what can be done to fix this.

I appreciate all the replies .. any more feed back or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Is there any other information I can tell you guys to help?

Oh .. I also tried the Beta 163.11 drivers .. no luck.
