Could anyone give an indication of what the performance increase is likely to be in regards to the above cards, assuming no CPU limitations?

Cheers

Well I have an i7 920 - standard clocks.

Only have a 650w power supply so a bit worried about that.

HD is a Intel 520 120 GB SSD

what is the exact model psu? a high quality 650 watt will be fine as long as you do not go insane with high voltage overclocking on the the cpu and gpu. and surely a 120gb SSD is not your only hard drive is it?

Can't remember the exact model of PSU, at work at present, pretty sure I got a decent model though when I upgraded it.

Nah no overlcocking for me.

The 120Gb SSD is the my main drive, OS and all apps/games, have en external USB drive for storage of large files etc..

I uninstall anything I haven't used for a while, so 120gb suits me fine.

My 8800gtx is still in my closet, my backup card in case of RMA'ing or whatever. Good card

The g80/g92 core i believe is the longest lived gpu processor to date.

Been gaming on a 9800gtx this last week cause a 560ti went bad and now saving funds for a 580.

This card with a 2500k holds its own i'm really surprised and i bet it will handle BF3 just fine.

Going from a q6600 or whichever cpu you had when you got your card to that i7 920 must have helped with fps too huh? Gave that old beast some new life like this 2500k has done to this old 9800gtx.

I still have my 9800GT in my machine - haven't installed my 560 Ti yet.

The G80/G92 was too hot, but otherwise was an amazing generation. BF3 might finally kill it, but coupled with a 2500k, it'll still run a lot of current games at good framerates in DX10. I can play SC II - ultra on mine. The card I had before that, a 7950GT, only lasted me about 18 mos before it started stuttering in games.

Yep my 8800gtx lasted me forever... except the downside is that I paid $650 for it lol.

It handled all games up to Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, and Unreal Tournament 3 easily...

yeah if you factor in the price then people better get many years out of it. I paid 1/3 the price for a gtx260 not too long after the 8800xtx was still selling for crazy prices.

The difference in performance is like literally 1000 percent faster.

If you play @ 1080p 8xAA 16xAF high quality on that 8800GTS on a game like Crysis 2 or any new game, its gonna be slow as a turtle.. 30fps.

With a 5xx that 30fps will be 200fps if vsync is off, which it shouldn't be cuz it tears images.
turn vsync on and get 60fps capped.. never goes down , no matter what scene in a game.

Put it this way the difference is, like comparing a Pentium D to a 2600k .

thx gb

Me too. Have a nice AC Accelero on it. I'll probably never sell that card - not after four and a half years of owning it.

Like going from a ford fiesta to a Lamborghini. I've owned both and still have the Lamborghini aka GTX 580

It's not as massive as some people are purporting it to be, but it is large...
It's like going from a GF4 Ti 4200 to an 8800GTX. You get the next generation of DirectX support, and about 3x the performance.

I've had a GF2MX, GF4Ti4200, 7900GS, 8800GTX, HD5870, GTX 580,GTX560 Ti x2, 6970x4 and I must say the 580 vs the 8800gtx enabled me to play a few games I had been wanting to play which is exactly what you want from a graphics card. I usually hold off on upgrading until there is a game out that I really dig and my current setup can't keep playable framerates maxed out with no AA at 1080p.

The 580 will allow you to play a few games that you couldn't otherwise play with the GTX, but if you're willing to crank a few settings down, you could get by with it until the next wave of cards hits and the prices come down on the 580 even more.

A ~$250 580 would be THE bang for the buck for sure.

a gtx580 is 2.5-3 times faster than an 8800gtx. considering an 8800gtx is still no slouch that is a pretty huge upgrade.
