8800 GTX Underclock

after underclocking my 8800gtx to 290/450 (used during normal 2d operation), it has brought down the core idle temp from 62c to 53c! my case temp went down a couple degrees as well. my E6600/zalman9700 is also happier. ive never considered underclocking a gpu until i got this little heater of a card. now i think i can survive the summer months ahead. lol. that is all.

At those clocks you won't notice the difference between IT and my parents GeForce 6200...I'll trade you (?)

Heh, certainly not a bad idea. The good news at least is it doesn't heat up much even under load. Its just toasty 24/7/365. In my old case, my 8800GTS ran extremely hot because of poor airflow, 80-82C at both idle and load. Moved my rig from the Lian-Li PC60+ to an Antec Nine Hundred and temps dropped to 53C idle 60C load.

Well, the updated cooler that NV has specified on the 8800GTX certainly has to help. I always wondered why they never tried exhausting out the back before. All the aftermarket cooler solutions did it but it took NV forever to figure it out.

I got my card running in a Thermaltake Soprano (Tsunami with a plastic front door instead of metal). The case intake 120mm fan' airflow blows directly in front of the GPU's cooler intake so she's getting a nice shot of cool air all the time!

well, i was running the 8800gtx at 630/1030 before i did the underclock. although i set it to only run during 3D using rivatuner, it still heated up like a mofo. not sure why. and the fact that the fins are exhausting air inside my case certainly doesn't help.

and you guys are right, good air flow is key, so im getting a pci slot fan to expel the air out back. i wasnt awared the 8800 will have a updated cooler, hmm it''ll be interesting to see what kind of temp it'll get..
