8800 + Vista = Suicide?

I'm planning on building a computer from scratch with an Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 gigs of RAM, an 8800 GTS, and Windows Vista Home Premium (I'm assuming that it's enough to run Vista well). Although it's supposed to be the "gamer's operating system," will I actually be able to play games well with the lack of good drivers and the apparently bloated OS? Am I correct to assume that Vista won't limit the games I can play?

you will see lowered performance with vista compared to xp in your games. driver issues seem okay as many ppl are doing fine with their 8800gts + vista.

I am running 8800GTS + Vista 32Bit, and it works just fine. Of course nVidia needs to release proper drivers for performance to be on par with Vista, but I have no problems so far.

i'm running that too. i'm starting to use XP less and less. I couldn't stand that games performed lower, but i guess i have to live with hit.

I'm not dead yet, and I've had Vista + 8800GTX for a month now. That being said, the one month old MS OS isn't quite as stable and doesn't have as much support for eveything yet as the one it replaced that came out 6 years ago. These things do take time, but if you're debating between buying either XP or Vista now you will feel like a dunce a year from now if you buy XP. On the otherhand, if you already have XP you could either stick with that or just dual boot Vista and XP if you're afraid of 100% Vista.

I spent a couple of weeks hard drive swapping between Xp and Vista until I realized that the performance delta between the 2 is rather insignificant. Running Vista home premium full time now. No problems besides Dark Messiah crashing upon exiting the game.

initially I didn't even want to upgrade to 8800gts, but Vista forced me to. I had an NF3-X2-agp x800xl and it doesn't work together. it's a well documented un-fixable problem.

I did expect some glitches, but not an incompatibility where i couldn't even get video acceleration.

besides that Vista has been pretty good. it's getting better by the day. lots of it has to do with manufacturers catching up to vista.

i use vista 64 bit ...i'm up to 34 games that run flawlessly vs 2 that do not (gta san andreas version 2.0 and mohA)

i am using onboard sound while i wait for the whole creative debacle to stabilize

edit: Check this link for tested games and some work arounds:

http://www.planetamd64.com/index.php?act=Print&client=printer&f=8&t=7546

you can also check out:

http://www.ntcompatible.com (which i have used since i got win2kpro all those years ago

disclaimer: some work arounds (on 1st link) mention using no cd cracks --But since starforce has released a 64 bit version of their protection --you can try that instead and stay legal.

Me, i continue to let chaos theory and gt legends collect dust until they drop that draconian protection altogether. Sometimes i am tempted to try them again...when i think of the money i wasted on them.

Supposedly, from what few articles I have read, the difference in games running slower on VISTA vs XP is only like 2%-3%. Which is expected to be improved over time. Those margins are not huge in of themselves. Besides if you are jumping up to a G80 model video card from something like a 7900 you probably wouldnt notice any less speed in gaming overall I would think since the G80 cards are much more powerful to begin with.

Right now I'd be more worried about compatibility, stability, and support issues with VISTA than anything else. That seems to be VISTA's bigger problems at the moment. Which should evetually get worked out. I dont like the pricing plans though.

About the time they get VISTA SP1 out thats when I'll consider migrating to VISTA. Until then I'm perfectly happy with XP Pro.

maybe a better question would be "why should i install vista?"....

I have Vista Ultimate (32 bit) in a dual-boot setup with XP Pro using an 8800GTX ... so far the only game I've compared is Dark Messiah & as far as framerates go I havn't seen much of a difference, however sound quality with my X-Fi in Vista is still piss-poor. I'm not concerned because I'm pretty sure it'll get better by the time I really need it ... in other words when Crysis ships!

so where are dx10 games that require vista?

oh, there aren't any yet...

and there are more questions which won't be answered until they arrive, such as

can the 8800 even handle them?

what will dx10 offer (as in cant tell the diff between sm2 & sm3)?

will it be worth it?

edit: and it's not like you're not going to be able to play upcoming games in XP/DX9 for quite some time. do you actually think they will snub 99% of the market in order to cater to the 1% who have xp? i think not... won't happen for several years until vista/dx10 gets market penetration.

Although, I agree. There's no game which can take advantage of it at the moment.

CoH is "DX10" ... now, isn't it ... or was the patch delayed?

if not, has anybody noted the differences over DX9 via the patch ?

Oh, gods... that O/S sucked huge! I been using PCs since Windows 3.0 and ME was the worse I have seen to date. I'm not on the VISTA bandwagon but I cant imagine it being that bad. LOL

Also from what I have heard VISTA doesnt even have DirectX10 on it yet and wont till later this year. Buying a G80 for DirectX10 alone isnt wise IMHO. Buy it because its faster and better performance than the current cards is though. Assuming you need a better card and ready to upgrade.

Didnt the Conan MMO get delayed? I thought I heard recently they announced it being delayed till end of 2007.
