Thanks for this Azn. Too bad they didn't mention how the power requirements compare with these two cards. I'm trying to pick out a new card for my brother who has a Dell XPS system built in 2005 (P4 @ 3.2ghz, 2gb RAM, Win XP) and it has one of those proprietary 460W PSUs. The Dell tech couldn't tell my brother how many amps on the 12v rail and it's not listed on the unit anywhere.

This article is very timely b/c I was looking at these exact 2 cards -- it's going to come down to what will go easier on his PSU.

Thanks for the link. No surprises here -- with 3/4 the hardware the 8800GS turns in 3/4 the performance of a 8800GT. At 7/8th the price. Once this card (and the 3750 both settle to $150 price points w/o rebate) it'll be hard to pick a loser between the two unless you absolutely demand FSAA. This is what midrange graphics cards should be!

At current prices the 8800GT is the pick of the litter though.

One thing I didn't care for was the cpu of choice. These are midrange cards and they were using a higher end CPU that most people looking at these cards aren't going to be using. I would have liked to have seen it run on a midrange C2D. Other than that looks good if this is midrange video

That is irrelevant consider most CPU scaling tests show that even on the most CPU demanding games (UT3, Crysis) a dual core at 2.2ghz is enough... so yeah it doesn't really matter.

The 8800gs uses less power under load conditions,.

The Dell 460 with handle a 8800gts or 3870 also.

I didn't like how they seemed to pick different resolutions/aa levels at random for their tests. It was interesting that they had the 8800gs xxx faster in every test but still gave the 3850 the editor's choice award. They should have compared 2 cards with the same price, maybe a 3850 512 vs that xxx or a 3850 256 vs a normal 8800gs.

Really? I thought they were on pretty good terms with ATI? They were also one of the few review sites to use the most current driver available for their review of the HD3870X2 to show it in it's best light? For the record I don't frequent their site so I won't be arguing with you on this. I'm just surprised you're saying this, that's all.

They were also one of the few review sites to use the most current driver available for their review of the HD3870X2 to show it in it's best light? For the record I don't frequent their site so I won't be arguing with you on this. I'm just surprised you're saying this, that's all.

I know it's your nature to think so, but my request wasn't a jab. I really wanted to know. And, if H had a review up yet, i would have posted it. expreview is the only other I could find that didn't just have 3DMark06 benches. So, keep an eye on computerbase as I know you love that site.
