My budget is around 150 max (the price of the 3870)

I can get the 8800GT for around 120-30, and the 3850 for the same price.

I've got a 6600GT right now

Looking at the benchmarks, the 3870 and the 8800GT are pretty similar, I just want to know how much difference the extra RAM makes.

(I'll be running at a max of 1280x1024 probably)

Prices in pounds by the way.

where are 3850s 250 usd???

msrp for 3850s are about 84 pounds. which is about 170 USD. some even go for 160 USD.

if you're looking for ABSOLUTE performance, go with the gt.

if u're looking for cooler, quieter, less power consumption at a 10-15% performance loss, go with 3870.

The 512mb 3850 over here is around £120, and the 256 is around £100. The 2870 is around 140-150. And the cheapest 8800GT is 120-130 ish.

So at the price of the GT 256mb, its between that and the 3850 512mb.

Between the 8800GT 256 and the 3850 256 i would say the GT is the better choice. You are better off though going with the 3870 as your best bet,if you can afford it, it will allow you to enable aa/af at the resolution you stated.

is that 1.3 FPS on some of those benchmarks? way to go finding some unrealistic benchmarks to skew results... who cares... And those results are heavily and artificially skewed in AMD's favor.

Huh? At 1280x1024, which is the resolution thedonutman is interested in running, the 256MB GT can run plenty of AA/AF.

I play all my games at 1680x1050. I'd like to be able to use at least 2x FSAA and play at the highest detail settings. I have a 7900GTX stock frequency now and I'd like to upgrade. I'm willing to spend around $260 and I'm willing to wait for 8800GT pricing/availability to get down there.

My question (and the reason I posted in this thread) is whether it's worth considering a 3870 at all, or should I just wait for 8800GTs to reach my budget? In other words, if I abandon patience and spring for a 3870 now, will I be crippling my ability to play games at the native 1680x1050 res of my LCD?

New G92 8800GTS is probably going to be out of my budget but I'd consider it if it's an amazing product.

XBIT lab is great but they do take their sweet time to release their review.

Firingsquad is probably my 3rd fav GPU review website and it was my fav 1.5 year ago.

SniperDaws :

I don't think 3870 or 8800GT 256MB have either cliamed victory when higher res with AA/AF is used. Depends on the game you going to play.

Also the reason i even posted was because of zeroburrito statment on 8800GT 256mb totally destroying 3870.
" the 8800gt 256 completely humiliates the other 2 cards in any resolution. " which is totally iuntrue :!

Oblivion HDR 1920x1200x32 4xAA 16xAF

How did you get that to run? When I try to turn Anti-Aliasing on in Oblivion, it turns the HDR off. HDR is far more important to me, so I keep AA off, but if there is a way to get both, I would like to know it!
