8800GT clock speeds and performance

Hey guys,

Does anyone have any links to performance comparisons among the different clocked speeds of the 8800GT? Low end is 600MHz and the high-end is 700MHz.

I have an eVGA 8800GTS 320MB that I want to step up, but eVGA only lists the low 600MHz 8800GT to step up to and I'm wondering if I should just get the low end one.

I have 40 or so days to decide (and maybe eVGA will let you step up to a higher clocked 8800GT).

EVGA changed their step-up policy and only allows step-ups to their reference models, so the 8800GT 600mhz will be your only option. But you should have no issues overclocking it to 700mhz speeds.

thanks for the quick reply.. damn that sucks. if I'm lucky maybe they'll have their new faster 112 shader 8800GTS's for sale, because I'll probably just step up to one of those instead.

The rumors going around target December 3 as the launch date for the G92 refresh of the 8800GTS. You should certainly wait at least until then before making a choice.

To answer the original question: yes, the 700 vs 600 does make an appreciable difference. It's really sad but almost no-one has benchmarked the SSC edition yet. I could only find one review and it shows the SSC performing equal to or slightly above the level of an 8800 Ultra. At stock speed the 8800GT will perform about the same as an 8800GTX.

Someone must have been smoking something while doing the SSC review, because there are times when the 8800 Ultra gets lapped by the 8600GTS. There's the Bioshock benchmark where for some reason the 8800Ultra's performance goes up 25% when the resolution *increases* from 1280x to 1680x, while the 8800GT loses half it's performance in the same situation. Makes absolutely zero sense and does not match with any other benchmarks so far.

I remember someone complaining that if they stepped up their max version GTX to a base Ultra they'd be taking a performance hit

Why would someone get an Ultra anyways? It's a total gimmick with the slightly modified cooler and upped clock speeds.

b/c they have more money than sense as my dad used to say.

an 8800gt ssc could very well beat an ultra at lower resolutions, but at 1920x1200 and up the ultra would start to pull away just as it does vs the stock 8800gt.

I kind of doubt you will step up to the new 8800GTS unless it has higher memory size. They might market it as some type of 8800GTS SSSC or something.
