I agree totally. If you were referring to my previous post it was a "joke" indicated by a smiley face. I can't see anyone damaging a working 8800GT, especially for the new cooler which is good, but not that good.

I would possibly ask BFG but strongly outline that my card is not defective if i was really really desparately bothered. That would leave a decision up to them.

Personally, rather than spending my time doing that and possibly losing a card for a few days and get hit with shipping charges, I would just order XYZ good aftermarket cooler and fit it myself. Might take at a long stretch, two hours to do including research time finding the best cooler for me, shopping for it etc.

My god, 785 on the core and 1879 on the shader, did you volt mod it?? My gigabyte only does 685 with 1690 with the fan at 75%.

No volt mod. I just turn the fan to 99% and all the fans on my Antec Nine Hundred to high, it does get a little warm on load at this speed. I get up to 66C on load, but it raises my ambient temperature in my box by 15C. For the life of me, I cant get the memory above 949 and be 100% stable. I would like to have a quieter fan, because at 99%, its way louder than the other 8 fans running in my box. I would never say its defective and try and return it, but it would be nice to get an updated fan.

Newegg hasn't received 8800GT SSCs since last Monday (Dec. 3). How likely is it that the next shipment of 8800GT SSCs will have the new cooler?

It's not like we have a lot of old 8800 GT sitting around unsold, so the next patch available should have the new fans, right?

Well my solution is better than that wimpy new cooler they have. My CM 690 case has a spot right about where your GPU sits for a 120mm case fan. Consequently I have a 120mm Yate Loon blowing cool air right onto my 8800GT. Now instead of 90C it only loads up to 81C

you probably also got lucky with the quality of your GPU... each one has slight differences which causes variations in the max OC you can get.

If you want a better fan they have some decent aftermarket cooling solutions for the 8800GT. With dual slot coolers blowing air outside the case and running it cooler as well. It should improve your OC.

When I was at my LCS, I seen a dual slot exhaust fan. I might get one of these and put right below my card to suck hot air out before it gets into the rest of my case. I really dont have any temp problems like many, but my case does sound like a hoover.

A hover? Like off the ground? A hover-case would be cool

I think he meant hoover

I just picked one up today, not sure if it has the old or the new cooler, but in any case I don't see how it could be louder than my X1900xt under load.

all you 8800gt chaps should consider getting accelero S1s to cool the card and get more headroom on OC. my 8800gt 512 is coming next year courtesy of dell's delays. but anyways, accelero S1 is my choice for the cooler for this card.

Sorry for the typo, I was on the way out the door. My case is pretty loud, I have 6 fans running at full speed, and the GT fan as well. The GT fan is way louder than all the other fans put together in my Nine Hundred case. I am suprised that when I am running everything on high, and the card maxed out, my peak temp on the 8800 is 65C on the last drivers I downloaded. It will raise my ambient temp by 15C when playing after about 30 minutes. Thats a pretty big jump considering all the fans that are in my case. Thats a pretty good toaster oven in there.

My 8800GT should be in Tuesday. Hopefully, it will have new cooler on it for break in. But once the card has proven it won't have infant failure issues, the air cooler is coming off and the MAZE4 water block is going on!

That block took over 20C off my current X1900 and I bet it will take even more off the 8800GT. Now I just need to get the proper RAM sinks...

These coolers don't seem to be on the current batch of 8800GTs. My brother got one from Best Buy on Saturday from a fresh new shipment and it has the old cooler. They may only appear on the 256MB versions, but that doesn't make any sense.

I read HERE

"That's because Nvidia didn't change the cooler.

Different cards have different OEM's and even more so for the coolers that go on them. Nvidia is only responsible for what you see on the cards released very early; the "reference" cards. What happens after that, whether for performance, reduced noise, reduced cost, etc. is up to the OEM."

Here is a card with new cooler and black pcb (came out end of last week)

In any event, a lot of people been having troubles with the new 8800GT's so I would be sure to get new cooler if buying (and the memory from Qimondo on early boards looks to be troubled as well). About the heat probs The Enquirer wrote on Oct 4 2007:

"G92 has heat problems"

"IT SOUNDS LIKE Nvidia's G92, the next-gen high-end part, is having heat problems. Several people told us that a few weeks ago, they got an urgent letter from NV to send them computers that the new G92 would go in for 'thermal analysis'. Hmmm, makes you wonder, doesn't it?"

Well, after playing with the 8800GT for a couple of days, I can definitely say that air cooler is GOING this weekend.

I'm really surprised at how much it makes my case fans spin up during gaming due to all the heat being dumped in the case. With my old watercooled X1900, all that heat was being dumped out of the case (in my closet to be exact), so the case temperatures never came up enough to cause Speed Fan to crank up the case fans from the default 55% even during heavy, extended game sessions. I do have the temperature threshold set fairly low. so the case temps don't have to go up much before the fans would spin up.

Hopefully, by this weekend the new card will be fully burned in and I can trust it enough to start unscrewing the stock cooler...

Oh, and all the people that say the fan is not that loud must either be deaf, or they have never spun it up all the way. At 100% speed, the thing sounds like a hair dryer!

I'll need to check on the 8800GT I received on the Step-Up program. I don't remember the fan being that small, so it may be the new cooler design.

In a P180 case with two top mounted Arctic Cooling AF12's, the bottom tunnel stock Tri-Cool, an optional Scythe Slip Stream 120mm in front, and a Thermaltake SL1 at the bottom most PCI slot - my temps never get that hot to cause the fans to spin up.

I received my 8800GT from eVga step-up yesterday.Thankfully it came with the bigger fan. I bought an S1 for it but the stock fan is doing a great job at 50% and it's barely audible. This is with an overclock of 675/1950. Load temps do not exceed 75C in 70F ambient. Very happy with the temperatures and overclock from stock of 600/1800. So much so that the stock cooler will remain in place and the S1 will be placed on my VisionTek 3870. The stock cooler on the 3870 works pretty well, but the fan is very whiny at even 40% output. When it cranks up it sounds like a hair dryer but it does cool very well.

Ah!!!!! The sound of (almost) silence!!! I finally yanked the factory cooler off and stuffed on the RAM/VReg heat sinks and bolted up the MAZE4 water block. The temperature differences are stunning, to say the least. The sound differences are probably more stunning.

Before:

Idle: 55 to 60C GPU, 50 to 55C system
Load: 90 to 95C GPU, 60 to 65C system (if my memory is correct)

After:

Idle: 34 to 35C GPU, 34 to 35C system
Load: 38 to 39C GPU, 36 to 38C system
Plus, my case fans no longer spin up above 55% (lowest speed I allow in Speedfan) even heavy gaming.

I think I'm going to let everything run for a week or so at stock speeds before I crank up the speeds and voltages to see what she has in her...
