I know the 8800GT is an awesomely priced card, but should I wait and see what ATI/AMD offers? I know if I wait the 8800GT might be out of stock for a while, do you guys think that ATI will be able to compete with the 8800GT?

I doubt the 8800GT is going to go out of stock. I know I'm waiting.

Who knows? If you really want to err on the side of caution, then wait. Mind as well also look out for the 8800 GTS refresh that's rumored to come out.

Don't believe anyone that says that ATI is going to bomb this launch or pwn this launch; data's too sketchy to know at this point. If you're patient, then I'd say wait to see what's out there (mid November is what the price is).

Compete with the 8800gt? Definitely. If they can't, then they can't compete with NVIDIA at all. The 8800gt holds the mid AND the ultra high range (with SLI for cheepz), so they'll either be forced to compete with price, performance, or both. If they can't somehow manage a $250 card that equals the performance of the GT then they are in deep trouble.

I'm definitely waiting, as the price on the GT will only go down for a few months once the initial splurge is over (and the AMD part is introduced), and there will likely be a REAL high end part meant for DX10 to follow the GT in a couple months as well.

Yes, wait. No matter whether the ATI or Nvidia card ends up the better buy, you'll know you made the right choice. Besides, not like you're going to have to wait a few months to find out - at minimum doesn't the wrap come off the new ATI cards in around two weeks or so?

Besides, then you'll skip the initial price gouging going on with the 8800GT.

nvidia said the GT should cost 200$. For example on NCIX it started at 240$ and within hours jumped in price all the way to 290$ and being out of stock... it litterally went up in price by 10$ per hour... since the ATI card comes in two weeks I will wait until it comes out and unless it is steller get the GT... by then the price gouging on the GT should be over and you could find it in the low 200s...

I believe Tom's Hardware Articles of 29 October say that in the middle
of November in just a couple of weeks ATI will release its HD 3800 card model,
and also NVIDIA is expected to release some additional new card models as well.

I think it'll be the same or similar time frame Crysis is released.

The new ATI card (according to T.H.) has DX10.1 support and some other
nice features. Rumors are that it will be price competitive with the 8800GT,
and may offer better image quality if not better performance, we'll see.

I refuse to use ATI cards due to their horrible LINUX/UNIX driver support, but
for those gaming in XP / VISTA who don't mind ATI, you should probably
wait until after the 15th or whenever of November when the
new ATI HD3800, and other new NVIDIA cards are out, CRYSIS is out, etc.

Rumours are that the ati card is slightly slower but cheaper. Even if you don't buy one it'll bring the prices of the 8800GT back down.

The smartest thing to do is wait a month or so before hitting the buy button.

Reasons:

1. ATI is releasing their new cards in less than a month. (Nov 19 is the rumored date according to a leak that has been attributed to AMD.)

2. Prices will be jacked up in the short term until the supply of the 8800GT can meet the demand for the product. It will take a few weeks to a month for the prices to come down to MSRP or slightly below.

3. If ATI's new cards are competitive in performance/price, there will be increased pressure for further price cuts. This could mean by the end of the year we may see the 8800GT 512 below the $200 price point.

4. You waited this long. Is it really going to kill you to put off the purchase a short period of time to see where the price/performance ratio is actually going to land? I think I can control myself a little longer just to see what ATI's offerings are going to bring to the table.

Edit:

I refuse to use ATI cards due to their horrible LINUX/UNIX driver support, but
for those gaming in XP / VISTA who don't mind ATI, you should probably
wait until after the 15th or whenever of November when the
new ATI HD3800, and other new NVIDIA cards are out, CRYSIS is out, etc.

With the new catalyst drivers for Linux, ATI cards are now on equal footing with Nvidia performance wise and can now use AIGLX instead of XGL for Compiz. With AMD opening up the specs for open source driver development and their much improved catalyst drivers, I have no qualms now with buying a ATI card. The days of poor Linux support for ATI are over.

As everyones else says, wait for prices to come down and to see what ATI has. I mean, what is the point of buying a mid range card for a higher than midrange price?

I'm such a stupid fanboy. If the 8800GT was an ATI product I'd have overnighted it by now.

I don't know why I'm so stuck on holding out for ATIMD. I guess I'm just pulling for the underdog.

Problem is, it doesn't help capitalism to be a fanboy.

Wait just in case ATI pulls another rabbit out of its hat! I hope they do then it will be a great time to buy a video card because prices should be pretty reasonable even for the top high end cards!

I lean towards Nvidia, but if an ATI card comes out that is a better price/performance leader, then by all means I will buy the better card. I just can not bring myself to the point of rewarding lackluster performance no matter how much I have liked past products.

I agree. My money goes to the better product. However, I like to spend as little as possible, so if ATI has a good price point for the performance of the card, then I would consider it. I hate to spend too much money on such frivolous things... So, I hope the performance is decent so I can spend a little less.

I am thinking about waiting for either ATi's DX 10.1 cards or for nVidia's DX 10.1 cards (if nVidia has any coming) instead of buying the 8800GT so quickly.

this is just like when Q6600 and 2900 pro came out. wait a few weeks for the price to settle down and then examine your options. The one big bonus on this release is that there is allegedly going to be some competition in a few weeks, which should further force down prices.

The 8800GT is exactly what I've been waiting for but I'll still wait. I've waited this long. The price of the 8800GT might come down a bit or maybe some yet to be released cards will blow it away. I am leaning towards Nvidia though, just because I have a SLI mobo.

I chose the GT, I don't have the patience to wait any more. I'll upgrade again if the performance is that big. I got an eVGA 8800GT SC with Quake Wars for $251 shipped I think it will be worth it.

Yah, i want the evga series because i have had good luck with those cards, but im willing to wait till the rush slows down, and i still want to see what ati has.

overall 10.1 would be nice, but honestly there really are not any games coming out for along while to take advantage of it, and im not really interested in upgrading to vista till the resource issues are resolved, or the 64bit version becomes worthwile.

Yup.

Either way, I am still thinking of going Nvidia when the 8800 GT goes down to around $250. I have owned nothing but ATI over the past several years (9800 Pro/X850 Pro), time to see what the other side has to offer.

Always wait for the competition esp if it's only 2 weeks left...plus the prices are inflated right now.
