So pretty much i have $220 in my wallet that im looking to spend on a video card.

after looking at the 8800gt benchmarks, i'm not looking to settle for anything less.

My question is, when the new ATi cards come out, will the 8800gt's 512mb price drop down to $200? thats what i've been hearing but i'm not sure if its still a rumor or if its true.

can anyone give me the details? thanks.

The 512MB 8800GT was supposed to release at the price of $200 while the OC'd versions sold for $250. But of course since the product just came out, e-tailers such as Newegg.com and others will hike the prices. That's nothing new.

The 256MB 8800GT will be around $150-$175 if I'm not mistaken. I guess we'll find out when they come out.

out of all the places, newegg has been the most expensive. I'm kind of shocked... their SSC version of the EVGA card is $329!!!!!

I'm stuck on either buying now on the EVGA website or holding off for any type of price cut.

danny~!

newegg automatically increases price as sales reach a certain point. so, for example, if they had 1000 evga sc 8800gt cards and they sold 500 of them in an hour, they would start bumping up the price. a LOT. in a short period of time. their software tries to keep them from going OOS, esp on new releases like 8800gt. even with their prices being so high, they're still OOS on all of them except one of the evga's right now.

what everyone is hoping for is that 3870 will be competitive enough/cheap enough to reign in 8800gt prices. if it is then 8800gt 512 should eventually get down to the $200 range. if 3870 is the 2900xt to 8800gt's 8800gtx, then we might not EVER see an 8800gt for $200.

No one ever said that OC'ed versions would only be $250. Nvidia supposedly said that MSRP for the 8800GT would fall between $200 and $250. As they don't have anything to do with the specs their board partners sell their overclocked versions at, they wouldn't be giving out MSRPs for those cards.

One of the preview GT threads already went over all the 4 different versions of the 8800 GT, including the budget variant with a 6-layer PCB instead of the 8-layer version that most of the current models are using. My guess would be that it's the 6-layer version we will be seeing coming out at ~$200 from the lower-end partners (PNY and below).

supposedly the 256mb ones will be 1400mhz ram, so those might be a different pcb since the ram isnt running at such high clock. those will probably be easily under $200

As far as I know MSRP was to be $199 for 256mb cards, not yet released, and $250 for 512mb cards. I think ATI is doing a really solid, HARD launch of their new cards, so their prices can remain low, because that's how they will have to compete. I'm guessing they'll be 150$ish for the cheapest, and 250$ish for the most expensive one. I'd definately wait on those cards, because it will hamper sales of the 8800gt, dropping their prices as well. I doubt we will be seeing $200 8800gt 512mb cards though. Just think about it, what would the 8800gt 256mb cost, $150? Where would all the lower end models go to ?

sigh, for the last time, no. i swear a couple people love to spread that untruth and they probably work for an e-tailer lol.
512MB reference design from lower-tier manufacturers like PNY and XFX are $200-$220 MSRP. reference design from top-tier like eVGA are around $220MSRP. Overclocked models from lower-tier manufacturers are around $220-240, and from top-tier they're $230-250, with the extreme cards like eVGA SSC being $260-270.

That's all the MSRPs are. And if you saw the prices when they were first posted on e-tailer sites before they all went out of stock, you'd have seen those prices like we did.

So they'll be back, they just need to finish soaking the suckers and people who couldn't wait.

So what's the 256mb going to cost ? $150 ? What's the lower-tier 256mb going to cost ? $130-150?

If you take a look at EVGAs site, they are selling them at about $10 less than Newegg but their shipping charges are over double. The cost is about the same as Newegg so my guess is that Newegg like all retailers are paying more for the cards too. I don't think they are marking up the cards and making an overkill on profits. Maybe they do a little better on it now but I don't think they are gouging anymore than their supplier is gouging them.

we don't know because it hasn't even been announced yet!!
If the only difference is the RAM, I'd expect to see them priced from $150-180 based on clockspeeds. Based on the out-run of supply on the 512MB models, I wouldn't be surprised if e-tailers try to bump all those prices up $10-20 for launch.

Ah wait I checked back, and noticed how nvidia indeed said that the 8800gt should cost between 200$ and 250$. So 200$ should be doable indeed if you've got the patience. I thought the 8800gt 256mb had been officialy announced though ? To be released somewhere in december or so? I suppose it would be a killer card to compete with ati's new cards, for people who play at 1024*768 or 1280*1024.

There is going to be no "lower tier" 256mb 8800GT so don't go holding your breath for one.

Another thing to consider is that supposedly nVidia miscalculated 8800GT demand and supplies are lower than expected. So its not just the etailers that are keeping pricing high at the moment by gouging. There is a bit of a supply problem going on. If you believe the nVidia rumors.

ATI's cards should help lower the GT cost but only if the ATI cards are really good. If they dont do well performance wise no one is going to bother buying them and that probably wont affect GT pricing much.

We'll have to wait and see what happens in the next week or two. Hopefully GT supply will increase. I'm thinking that'll be the biggest factor in prices.

That's not entirely correct. I was just at a nVidia PR session. Yes, there is a shortage. nVidia didn't underestimate the demand for the 8800GT, TSMC can't physically produce more chips-nVidia is wafer limited at TSMC (as is ATI), meaning if they increase the size of the chip, they have to reduce the number of chips produced. If you could build a fab as good as TSMC, you could EASILY max out your capacity tomorrow. The problem is building a fab as good as TSMC-only Intel or maybe AMD could do that.

hmmmm...amd just sold some of their older fab parts to um, russia I think. I wonder if they'll eventually start producing their own chips...if they're still around in 6 wks, of course.

I'm really hoping the price drops upon ATI/AMD card launch mid-November. I would love to pick up a eVGA SSC for $250

That said, I am still also waiting for confirmation on whether we will see a G92 GTS (512MB - 1GB card).
It sucks being in the market for a card and not having all the information so you can make a sound decision and not regret it in a month.

anyone else notice the atrocious move by newegg to mark all their GT as non refundable? You bought it you keep it... no returns. It wouldn't be so bad if it was their normal policy, but it isn't, and most people will not notice that this one item has a special policy attached to it.
