That's a fairly different result than what was given in the AT review on the 8800gt launch.

The word was I believe that 8800GT card would range from $200 to $250 (without mentioning whether that was for 256 or 512MB version). I would assume that $200 was for 256MB and $250 for 512MB. That said, current prices are still way above the MSRP. Those few that got on sub $230-240 deals at buy.com, fry.com and ncix few hours after release got lucky. I really don't think you can realistically expect 8800GT 512MB dropping below $220 ever, or at least until 9800 or whatever comes out.

unless 3870 is an 8800ultra fighter with a sub 200 price poing

yeah, you're right, they'll never get that low.

Either that, or perhaps they fear this http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2114582&enterthread=y
remember that nvidia did bump up their clocks significantly just before launch. I originally thought that they were trying to keep up with ati. It's now pretty obvious that they wanted to keep the perf lead in the midrange segment, too, but I do think that it will be interesting to see how all these new cards hold up over time.

I do not think they will be reduced just before the holidays. Considering how fast these sold out in so many places, my bet would be that they will stay in the same price range for a couple of months, of course there is always that sale price/coupon find.

This whole pricing thing has been bumming me out since last week. I can't spend over 200 bucks for a video card and I was hoping the 8800 gt was going to be the card for me, whether it's the 256 or 512 version. I don't upgrade very often, it's been a couple of years- I'm still on the 6 series so that might say something. I can't justify spending $200+ every year so I've sucked it up and played on lower resolutions with a lot of the eye candy turned off. Now, I can't play any of the newer demos that have come out unless I go down to *gasp* 800 x 600, and even then the FRs are getting pretty bad. So I can't put this off anymore.

I almost bought an 8600 earlier in the year, but the difference in performance between that and the 8800GTSs was too great for me to feel comfortable buying one. Not to mention all the hype I was reading about the new "affordable" card that was going to fill that gap between the $100-150 8600s and the $300+ 8800GTSs. Well, this thing may still be a great deal at $280-300 for those who are used to spending $300+ every year, but it isn't that great for those on a budget. XBox 360s are hitting the $279 mark for the holidays, at this point I'd almost rather spend the same for that whole system as I would on an 8800GT. At least then I know I wouldn't have to buy an XBox 720 just to play Crysis 2 or Bioshock 2 when they come out next year.

I read somewhere that the 256 version comes out tomorrow. Who knows at what price, but with the way things are going it will probably debut at the price the 512 version was supposed to be offered at ($250). All I want is a 200 dollar card with good performance that will last well into next year, so I hope the prices drop on these soon- I'd hate to have to wait until after the newyear. I'd even take the lesser performance of a 8800GTS if nVidia would just lower the price on that card until they come out with the newer version. I also think nVidia should also offer free upgrades to the newer version for the poor folks that purchased 8800GTSs in the last few months, but that's a whole 'nother topic.

sit tight. amd is releasing 3850 and 3870 on nov 19 so there's a good chance that 8800gt will go down at that time, plus you'll have some options on what you purchase. If you're playing crysis/etc you should not under any circumstances get a 256mb vid card, suck it up until one of the good 512mb cards (8800gt or 3870) goes down to 200. From what I've seen recently, the lower-tier nvidia partners (pny et al) are supposed to be in the 220 range msrp, so there is every reason to think that you'll either be able to get 3870 for 200 or, if it's a monster performer, 3850 for under 200.

well if you got in on the HardOCP special deal tonight with XFX (see Hard's frontpage) they did have some of their reference-clocked models available at $250 and as of this writing they still have their two higher-clocked models available at $279 and $299, IIRC. Each is $10-20 cheaper than NewEgg and they're in stock, expected to ship tomorrow. =)

hmm, am I better off with getting the XFX alpha dog OC or buying the bfg at bestbuy with 12% off coupon or buying direct from evga for around 290 shipped or just wait for my ncixus order but have no clue on when I will get my order?

I could spend more than $200 if I wanted to, but I don't want to invest that much money in a computer component that will depreciate in its resale and its use value as quickly as a video card! I'm hoping for some significant price drops too once the market settles down.

Exactly, I have to budget myself otherwise I'll spend $5,000 on a computer that's really only worth $500 in 4 months.

I haven't decided if I'll buy Crysis yet because I didn't think it was that great, there are a few other games I liked a little better. Then again, I haven't been able to run it on anything other than low settings so who knows. By "etc" do you mean most new games coming out over the next year or so or just the super graphically intense games? Do you think 512mb is important even if 1280x1024 is the highest res I'd be playing on or would that be considered "any circumstances"?
