8800GT Problems

I have recently purchased the Alpha Dog XFX 8800gt,and I seem to be having problems. They are :

1. Fan is always on low even under load, except on boot-up for 1st 3 seconds then goes to low
Rivatuner 2.06 doesnt help either.

2. Under Vista Crysis couldnt last for more than 10 seconds, display driver would stop working

3. 3dmark 06 has never finished under Vista. same prob as above.

My P.C was Overclocked, changed everything to stock still same problems. GFX card always at stock.
600/1800

What I have tried.

1.Drivers 173.xx that came with card, 169.02 and 169.04 = still no change !!

2. Format my HDD and go back to XP = Same problems except 3dmark 06 always gets bad artifacts on
Last SM3 HDR3 test which is the Antartic one, sometimes PC locks up altogether, says O.C failed on reboot
but when I change everything to stock still I still get bad artifacts on last 3dmark test ???

3. Unplug all extras from my PSU = still same problems.
4. All these tried non Vista and XP, XP slightly more stable but still same problems

BTW I have an Intel 2140 on 3GHZ OC 1.6 when stock and 2 GIG Corsair XMS DDR2800, Asus P5K Mobo
Also On GFX box it says recommended 500W PSU = My PSU is a thermatake 480W peak 550, with no native 6 pin PCIe
cable, So i use adapter , 2 four pins into a 6 pin, into one PCie 6 pin slot on card, which came with the card.

I think I have one of 3 problems.
1: Need more powerful PSU
2: Driver related problem
3: Faulty card

Those symptoms sound like my experience two years ago when I purchased then new 7800GTX. I ended up RMAing it and worked fine. I ended up spending $120 for a new PS and that wasn't the problem.

By your deduction 1 or 3 seems the most likely.
Except it could just be that your graphics card doesn't like the fact that your using an pci-e adapter to power it.

I basically have the same problem, you get a bluescreen with IRQL_DRIVER_SOMETHING right? with a nv4.sys error.
If you've tried different drivers and it is still problematic, its a hardware issue so the card is basically faulty - I am RMAing mine and getting a BFG 8800GT OC 512MB and getting cash back in return - gotta love sweden :>

Depending on where the temperature sensor for fan control is, could be poor contact of HSF to GPU (which is a type of faulty card, but one you can try to fix yourself with little risk).

Just a quick Edit, somebody pointed out that I need to have my 6 pin molex adapter connected to 2 seperate rails from PSU, and I have mine connected to just one rail.
could this be problem ? maybe explaining the fan on always low even under load ????
maybe low amps ????

your TT PSU only has 18A on the 12v rail plus it is only an ATXv2 spec . That extra 4 pins do matter on the MB for stability....

I hope I'm right on your PSU, otherwise upgrading to a modern ATX 2.2 spec will help immensely.

Tried 2 rails same problem
will RMA today if i still get same prob with new card then will change PSU
my 8600 gt was in till yest runs perfect

Your MB has an 8 pin to 4 pin connection , the TTpsu is not ATX2.2 compliant . You only have a single 12v rail 2 18A , please disclose the exact psu so we can diagnose.

CrystalBay is right on the money.

I had your exact same power supply. I used my Thermaltake 480Watt when i upgraded to the rig in my signature and had to also use the 2 4-pin molex to 6-pin pci-e adapter cable. I figured as long as it worked i should be fine.......wrong!

I had occasional lockups, hard locks when my card was put to use or in a game. I knew it seemed like a power supply issue, so i dumped it and got an Antec Triopower 550watt that i use now.

Never had a single lockup now since the upgrade going on 5 months now. Just goes to show you how important stable, adequate voltage is to a computer and video card.

That acticle is from mid 2003 , your problems very most like come from an anemic low lacking 12volt PSU , Please buy a modern PSU that is built for a modern board. as in your case....I'm just trying to help thats all

That is an excellent PSU.

corsair 550vx would also be an excellent choice (and under $100.) even the 450vx would work great! (yes, the box says more the 500 watts, but the 450vx provides 33A on the 12v rail. modern cpus/gpus all draw power primarily from 12v.)

85 watts (cpu, assuming your overclock)
135 watts (8800gt per nvidia specs, max tdp)
45 watts (mainboard)
15 watts (hdd)
25 watts (dvd/cd burner)
25 watts (memory)

330 watts total. yes, that is it. however, if all that was on the 12v rail, then you need 27.5 amps! most of that would be on the 12v rail, so you will need at least 24 amps or so total (probably more if spread out over multiple rails.. but a single rail is more efficient.)

Excellent choice. One of the best if not the best in the 600W mark for PSUs.

the wattage specification is very inaccurate... it is just thrown there....

Basically you need a power supply that has tight voltages and enough amps on each individual rail as required by your components... This is alot of different things to compare so they just throw a "XXX Watt" label on it.

It was a faulty card, dealer tested it and comfirmed it faulty
gave me a replacement on the spot
decided to get a corsair 620 HX PSU just in case.

My EVGA 8800GT KO works fine so far, but I haven't really stress tested it yet. I'll be sure to let you know if I encounter any problems like the one you've described during any stress testing I do over the next few days. I have a Seasonic 430W PSU, so I hope that I won't encounter any problems on that front...

Anyone else with an 8800GT installed have anything good or bad to report yet?

One thing I noticed was that your old power supply was rated for only 18A on the 12v line. The EVGA website says their 8800gt cards require a 400w power supply rated for 21a on the 12v line for a single card.
