why would you bother upgrading from 8800gts 640 to 8800gt 512??? I know that it's cool to have the newest card and all, but how much more performance do you realistically expect to get? If you really want to do something you should put the 8800gts 640 on ebay now before people start to realize how badass the 8800gt is. Maybe if you could break even on the swap it would make sense.Originally posted by: Rusin
Yeah.. I think performance difference will be higher with 8800 GT 256 vs. 512 than with 8800 GTS 320 vs. 640.Originally posted by: keysplayr2003
512 seems to be the sweet spot for most.
1024MB version won't be necessary, but will sell enough..there are enough fools out there.

Waiting for new 8800 GTS 640MB..but I'm not in very big hurry for new card.. this old 8800 GTS 640MB is still decent (well fourth best in DX10 after 8800 GT, GTX and Ultra)
Or if HD3870 can come around a tree and suprise me .

3 problems.
1. there is no 1gb card planned for either 8800gt or rv670. these are both "midrange" cards. maybe there will be one in r680 or g100.
2. sli is nowhere close to a 100% increase in performance. It does help quite a bit at very high res, however.
3. overclocking in sli is highly difficult and not usually recommended.

can't wait for this to come out, sold my 7900gs and currently using a x300se until the 8800gt comes out. was tempted to buy a 2nd hand 8800gts but must be patient !

With all the new stuff about to come out...
What would you suggest that I do?
No I don't have sli mobo (or it would require customised bios) Crossfire is supported. Problem is that second card would have to do with PCI-E x4 lane speeds (Asus P5B-Deluxe.. don't know why I did change my Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 for this..Gigabyte were better mobo)Originally posted by: bryanW1995
well, if it's your 3rd language then I'm in trouble. I live in south tx and barely speak espanol. If they left me in matamoros with a map and 200 pesos I'd probably die there
sorry, I missed that you were looking at gts640. wow, that's a nice oc you have on that 640. I'd be leery of switching to the new version, it might have more sp's but not oc as well... Do you have an sli mobo?

I'm thinking of selling my 7950GX2 which I have a buyer for already for $215 in order to get a 8800GT for $250. What does everyone think? Worth the trouble and money? Selling for $215, I'm not losing any money since it's about what I got it for.

I say yes. The 7950GX2 uses SLi, the effectiveness of which varies greatly depending upon the game and profile settings, whereas the 8800GT is a higher-performing, non-SLi solution. Given a difference of $35, this sounds like an excellent upgrade.
I wonder if the 8800GT's single-slot cooling solution is quiet.

I don't know how you guys can suffer without a decent card for weeks just to save what, like 20-30 bucks? I thought about it, and decided I'd rather keep my 1900xt until I have my next card, I can't stand being "cardless."

I think Foolish501 made the best sacrifice. Selling his 7900 to get the most he could for it before the wind blew in on the new stuff, and is miserable right now with an X300, albeit temporary. Suffer a little to gain as much as possible. Me, I'm stuck with a 640GTS that I won't be able to get over 225 bucks for in about a week. I use the term "stuck" pretty loosely. There are surely worse things I could be stuck with.

I think the 8800 GT 512 mb will be a nice upgrade for me especially for 250 - 270 dollars; 7800 GTX to 8800 GT until the next high end drops next year.
