Yeah.. I think performance difference will be higher with 8800 GT 256 vs. 512 than with 8800 GTS 320 vs. 640.

1024MB version won't be necessary, but will sell enough..there are enough fools out there.
----
Waiting for new 8800 GTS 640MB..but I'm not in very big hurry for new card.. this old 8800 GTS 640MB is still decent (well fourth best in DX10 after 8800 GT, GTX and Ultra)

Or if HD3870 can come around a tree and suprise me .
why would you bother upgrading from 8800gts 640 to 8800gt 512??? I know that it's cool to have the newest card and all, but how much more performance do you realistically expect to get? If you really want to do something you should put the 8800gts 640 on ebay now before people start to realize how badass the 8800gt is. Maybe if you could break even on the swap it would make sense.

1. there is no 1gb card planned for either 8800gt or rv670. these are both "midrange" cards. maybe there will be one in r680 or g100.
2. sli is nowhere close to a 100% increase in performance. It does help quite a bit at very high res, however.
3. overclocking in sli is highly difficult and not usually recommended.

1. True enough.
2. In some games, at some settings its very close to 100%. F.E.A.R. comes to mind. As you mentioned, the higher the better.
3. Not hard from what Ive dealt with in the past. Very easy actually.

Err... As I said in that post I'm waiting for new 8800 GTS 640MB..not 8800 GT 512MB. Also I did try to say that I'm not in big hurry right now.. old 8800 GTS 640MB is decent card. I also demand that my computer has to be very silent since I don't use headphones. With little Rivatuner tweaking that card fits perfectly in this consept with original cooler (one can't hear this computer from one meter / 40 inches away without concentrating)

Ps. Ebay ain't the thing in here Finland.. Well there is another internet auction site here and there are just suckers who don't seem to know much about these things. For example I sold at December 2006 my old Athlon XP 2800+ without cooler I got 110? which is like $157. There is also few 8800 GTS 640MB's there and those have gotten prices like 310-320? which is 30-40 lower than what these cost as new one in Finland. Well I bought mine from Germany with price of 300? including shipping costs.

(sorry about my 'engrish'..this is my third language)

well, if it's your 3rd language then I'm in trouble. I live in south tx and barely speak espanol. If they left me in matamoros with a map and 200 pesos I'd probably die there

sorry, I missed that you were looking at gts640. wow, that's a nice oc you have on that 640. I'd be leery of switching to the new version, it might have more sp's but not oc as well... Do you have an sli mobo?

I live in Jamaica and I have an 8800GTS 320MB. I paid US$280 for it in the summer. I can resell it for at LEAST $250 and maybe as high as $300.

With all the new stuff about to come out...

What would you suggest that I do?

Only through the hardware. And this does take advantage of the PCI-e 2.0, and no DX10.1 support.

EDIT: Let me amend that statement about Hardware & DX10.1. Supposedly, DX10.1 is backward compatiable with DX10.0 hardware.

This means you wont get DX10.1 effects, but you'll be able to run the game even if it is "10.1 only."

I think Foolish501 made the best sacrifice. Selling his 7900 to get the most he could for it before the wind blew in on the new stuff, and is miserable right now with an X300, albeit temporary. Suffer a little to gain as much as possible. Me, I'm stuck with a 640GTS that I won't be able to get over 225 bucks for in about a week. I use the term "stuck" pretty loosely. There are surely worse things I could be stuck with.

im right there with you man! I sold off my x1900XT and am using a x300 waiting for these new cards to come out..
It hasn't been soooo bad though. I just read the forums more and surf newegg instead of play games. The bad part? well now I have the upgrade from being on newegg and the hot deals forum so much...

I am also planning on getting a 22" LCD (1680x1050) and I was thinking about GTX/Ultra.
This late in the cycle, I'm kinda changing my mind.

Would the 8800GT 512MB be a good 'switch out' card for me? Seeing as though it won't really cost me anything much.

OR

Should I still go GTX/Ultra or wait for the next high end (when?)??

Thoughts, comments, suggestions....???

I wouldn't bother upgrading unless you can do it for free and/or you're really suffering in games with the new monitor. Wait for new high end in 6 mos if you can, it should be worth it!

No I don't have sli mobo (or it would require customised bios) Crossfire is supported. Problem is that second card would have to do with PCI-E x4 lane speeds (Asus P5B-Deluxe.. don't know why I did change my Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 for this..Gigabyte were better mobo)

As I said I'm not in hurry because this card is still pretty good. I got those clocks even when I have slowed GTS's fan (to 60%) with Rivatuner. I have one silent 8cm blowing cooler air for GTS. For old 88GTS this clocks pretty well. There have been many cases now that people get 675-685 for core clocks these days without any special tweaking. Thing is that I could basically still get more money from 8800 GTS than I invested so many months ago .

I'm thinking of selling my 7950GX2 which I have a buyer for already for $215 in order to get a 8800GT for $250. What does everyone think? Worth the trouble and money? Selling for $215, I'm not losing any money since it's about what I got it for.

I say yes. The 7950GX2 uses SLi, the effectiveness of which varies greatly depending upon the game and profile settings, whereas the 8800GT is a higher-performing, non-SLi solution. Given a difference of $35, this sounds like an excellent upgrade.

I wonder if the 8800GT's single-slot cooling solution is quiet.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. For example, certain games not being able to natively run SLI without modifications are annoying to deal with. I'm just thinking twice, how much performance increase would I get going to a 8800GT. Or perhaps I should just keep the 7950GX2 for a couple more months and get the 2nd generation DX10 cards in 2008? The 7950GX2 is still a great performer when SLI does work in games, no?

I've had two 6600GTs for over a year and a half now. I don't think I'm going to wait for the better cards any longer. This looks like just what I was waiting for.

I don't know how you guys can suffer without a decent card for weeks just to save what, like 20-30 bucks? I thought about it, and decided I'd rather keep my 1900xt until I have my next card, I can't stand being "cardless."

I won't be cardless selling my 7950GX2, and second of all, not being able to play games for a couple weeks doesn't bother me. I do a lot of other things with my time.

Actually this week I have a buyer for my card for $300

I'm in about the same boat. 7800gt OC here. I was awfully close to picking up a 2900pro but needed to wait. I bought this card 2 years ago, and its really showing its age now with the 1680x1050 res of my lcd.

I've got a 8800gts 640mb that I'm pretty happy with and this thing is making me thinking of selling it. Its really more of a lateral move though...and frankly, I don't like that crappy cooler. I prefer the double slot ones with an external exhaust.
