munis - yeah, I understand. I think the best tactic is to buy something then stay away from reading about possible replacements for several months.

If only I'd done that when I bought my x850xt a year and a half ago.

*sigh*

I feel worse. I bought my GTS 320 only 2 months ago and it's not making me happy that it's now worth crap for resale and being out performed by a card that is 30 dollars cheaper. At least I didn't get the 640 version that would of been an extra 120 dollars waisted. Not to mention it's a single slot solution, sucks less power, has full HD support, and wow...it's only 250 dollars...hah. *shoots himself*

Oh whadda shame.

But look at the bright side. The 8xxx series or ATi's 2900's are all ready "out dated" thanks to Cyrsis. Well, that's if you want to play Crysis at hi-res max details above 40 FPS.

I feel'ya, man. I've been in your shoes a couple of times.

This time though, I rolled the dice right for a change. I held off on buying a 640MB 8800GTS many, many times. Literally had the card in my shopping card and was hovering over the "Buy Now" button at least twice that I can remember.

Got the EVGA 8800GT today and within 90 days, for sure NVidia will come out with a new high-end part. I'll make the decision to upgrade (Step Up Program) then or not.

I'm overwhelmed that Nvidia actually cannibalized the 8800GTS. This is what confuses me about this generation of video cards. I'm so use to the high-end out first, then main stream and mid range later.

I was not expecting Nvidia to bring out a new main-stream video card, and now plan to discontinue the 8800GTS. I guess this is because, and thanks to, AMD and the 2900.

It will be hard to eat a bullet and purchase a 8800GT or a 8900 (whatever it will be called) when it comes out in the next 6 months. Crysis is a good game and all, but I don't see anything else like Cyrsis coming out for a long time. The Unreal 3 engine seems to have it's promise, though Bio Shock was a poor example so far of it's full potential. Alan Wake might be another contender for high end benchmarks, but it might just turn out to be another BioShock.

I'm just hoping AMD comes out with their Phenom. Though I doubt a 2.5 GHz+ Phenom will be out until early next year or for the least bit at a reasonable price. That's where my money is going to next year.

Does anyone think the prices on the GTXs are going to go down? I've been debating on what to do this Friday when I have the extra money to buy a new vidcard.

So far, I read the review on Anand that the GT's perform relatively equal with the GTS, however, lags a little behind the GTX. He even mentions buying 2 GT's to get the same or little better performance over the GTX. It sounds like the demand is driving up the prices for the GT's so I was thinking maybe getting the GTX now, maybe even getting a factory overclocked one. Then when prices start going down, pick up another GTX to go SLI if I ever decide I need the extra performance.

So now because of the greedy twats the GT isnt looking like the bargain it first was.....Grrrrrr.

that is exactly what happened with 2900pro

BUT there is a big difference ... 2900p was a limited run and GT is here to stay. nvidia is talking about $200 GTs by the end of November ...
--and i know it is hard to listen to someone counseling patience ... but prices on these cards *will drop*

Just sold my XFX XXX 320mb for 200 pounds - going to buy a 8800GT for 176 (its this price at all retailers it seems). Still a very good deal... I bought the GTS for 130 when I was in the US

In the end im very lucky compared to other recent buyers of the GTS...

Hope the market settles the prices of the 8800 GT where they should be otherwise those of us waiting to see the AMD/ATI 3850/3870 offering might be in trouble.

i would be interested to see a review comparing the 8800GT 512mb to the 8800GT 256MB
i am also very curious what the price of the 256mb version will be...won't these 2 cards pricing completely obliterate all the prices of the lower end cards like 8600GTS and downward?
i am starting to think nvidia shot itself in the foot while trying to shoot ati in the back

glad I decided to wait on my upgrade, just need to hold on a little longer until Crysis releases Nov 16th and see if Nvidia releases the card Crytech used to test gameplay.

bamacre, Crysis beta demo definitely uses multiple cores as I have my task manager running on my second screen and i see both cpus pegged at 99%. Crysis and UT3 are the only games to almost max out my cpu utilization and temp levels.

My frys.com 8800gt for $236 should get here on the Monday after my birthday this Saturday so, great present... for me!

In the techpowerup review the GT OC'd to 660mhz beats the GTX in a few of the tests. Very impressive.

Indeedy, especially considering the 8800GT SC I ordered has a 650MHz core clock. FINALLY: $300 on a video card well spent!

Honestly, I'll wait until the 9 series comes out. As far as DX 10.1 goes, even if the new cards from Nvidia and ATI are certified compatible, I highly doubt the first-gen dx 10.1 cards will have the power to push it. Look at Crysis, the single player beta so far has been destroying even the 8800gtx at max settings. So that means the most powerful dx 10 card we have, out of several, can't run the first true dx 10 game at max settings. It's not new, most hardware and software developers hardly get things right the first time. So, in conclusion, I'm just going to hang on to my 8600gts, boot into windows xp, and play crysis on medium in dx9 till the 9 series comes out. the 9 series will probably disappoint in some fashion as well, but if I keep waiting for the perfect card, well, I'll never buy a new card again

Not only that, but Crysis isn't even a "true" DX10 game no matter what the advertisements say - hence why the "features" that are supposedly DX10 only have been enabled in DX9 mode with the hacks. So just imagine what a ground up DX10 game would require to run to its full potential.
