I heard that the HR-03 v2 (non plus), vf900, vf1000 coolers work for the 8800GT I think i will be the first guinea pig to jump in and see if it does.

Zalman is an overrated and overpriced brand IMO. And recently, Thermalright has gone the same way. I'd say you just settle with a HR-03 + 92mm fan solution and get it over with.

It preforms better than stock, and is a mid-range cooler aimed at those who don't want to use up 3 Slots just to use the HR-03 and a fan. On top of that its cheaper. So why is it should he spend more on something that only shaves off a couple more degrees but takes up a lot more space?

Unfortuneatly this argument is totally valid in the computer cooling world. Why pay 200+ and take up all the space that a water cooling setup entails, when you can spend less, take up less space and only have temps be 10-20C higher? Because those few degrees mean everything to some and the price/space premium is worth it to them.

The thing is the HR-03 outperforms it by less than 5C. The Zalman cools better compared to passively cooled gr-03 and is just as quiet too.

I'm thinking of slapping on a retail Intel heatsink and see if it will fit. I remember a couple guys did that on X1900 and 7900 series cards with great results (although they were using the older heatpipe style AMD coolers). I just need to figure out a way to attach it.

Zipties. It will be pretty heavy though, so try to stabilize the card somehow.

Zipties might apply uneven pressure. I like to drill and tap heatsinks and use machine screws with nylon washers.

I was thinking zipties originally but, like PliotronX mentioned, I want to ensure an even load across the sink. I may just have to drill and tap it if I have a tap small enough.

I don't know why companies that make aftermarket heastinks haven't stuck with DHES design. Being all copper that thing will absorb a ton of heat but copper needs higher RPM fans to properly cool it. If the fins were aluminum it would have cooled a lot better. Then I really believe that they should have used plastic to better guide the airflow. The air from the fan doesn't reach over all the fins. Just a really poor design from Zalman but none of their VGA coolers have been well done.

Id say the zalman vf900/vf700 was quite good back in the days.

Zalman use to be very good. But now, it seems alot of the competition has overtaken them in the majority of the cooling deparment.

Cool.

But why not log into your own account......

If i were to use a regular cpu hsf, I would use some aluminum, 1/8" thick, by about a 1/2 wide. Drill and tap some holes in it. It would work perfectly.
