I am on the verge of buying a new computer and have decide on getting the 8800GTS, and in the specs from newegg it says that min requirements are +12V30A rail, but I can't find a power supply that actually has that . I was thinking about getting this Raidmax psu, http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16817152026 , but it says it only has +12V1@18A and +12V2@16A. Some people on the reviews say they've paired the PSU with an 8800gts, I was wonder if that was possible.

Here is what I plan on putting in the computer

C2D E6600
ASUS P5B-E
MSI 8800GTS-320
CORSAIR XMS 2GB
Segate Barracuda SATA3 7200 RPM
Samsung 18x DVD+-R SATA
Tuniq Tower 120
2 ATA133 Hard Drives, 7200 RPM

18A plus 16A totals 30 plus, so that power supply should be ok as long as it's not over rated

on a side note if I was building a new pc for performance. I would get a very high end, high grade, powerful Power supply. it would not be were I would skip on the money.
that power supply is about the bottom ratings wise as I would go

you can't always trust manufactures ratings

right, PSUs w/ multiple 12V rails can be added together if need be. You dont get the full amperage i think though, but you get most of it.

I'm at werk; don't have time to find a better one, but DO NOT get that PSU.

Also, adding 16A + 18A isn't going to tell you the maximum aperage, since it could still be far lower than 30A.

Corsair HX520
Enermax Liberty 500W

Just a couple to check out.

Oh, okay...so as long as the +12V rails add up to more then 35 I should be fine right? cause i don't plan on adding another device that will take up the other +12 line.

Thanks for the replies

Raidmax is teh suck.

I had a Raidmax PSU blow to smithereans and take my AXP system (R.I.P.
) with it.

Rosewill is going to be worse than Raidmax probably. It's Newegg's brand and I love Newegg but Rosewill is garbage.

Go for Antec, PC Power & Cooling, Seasonic, etc. Well known brands. I also saw a X-Ion brand 600W PSU on the Egg yesterday that I almost bought but found out I don't need. It had over 100 reviews and looked like a solid PSU with two 22A rails. Try that one out.

When a PSU has 2 or more +12V rails, it rarely is able to supply the full rated amperage on both rails at once. There should be a max current rating somewhere, like a dual 16A rail PSU can supply 30A, etc.

I always figure out what I plan to run on my PSU, then give yourself 25% extra on power (wattage) and current (Amps).

i recommend a antec TP2. i have one and it powers my opty and 8800gts320 wonderfully. it was cheaper too.

edit 1. oh boy it seems powrsupplies have increased in prices. i bought my Antec 550 W for 79.99 +free shipping. now i see the 430 costs as much.

...sort of. You're limited in how much amperage you can pull through an individual +12V line -- but as long as you can put the video card on a line by itself you should be OK. A high-end video card (like an 8800GTX) can use ~150W and pulls maybe 100W or so through the 6-pin PCIe power adapter from the PSU -- that's about 8-9A@12V. The GTS is a bit less demanding.

There's some question as to whether 'multi-rail' PSUs really have true multiple rails, or if you'll be okay as long as you don't pull too much current through any one connector/cable and you don't exceed the maximums for the whole unit.

Personally I'd go for a nicer brand than Raidmax, but that PSU should be capable of running your system.

While I'm not implying that you need something this powerful, this PSU certainly has more than 30A on a SINGLE RAIL:

My whole system, including an overclocked 8800 GTS, E6600 overclocked to 3GHz, 4GB RAM, etc, demands less than 18A on the 12V rail during load. So, trust me, you do not need a PSU capable of 30A on the 12V rail to power this card.

That said, the Corsair 520HX is a very nice PSU (which I happen to own personally), so go for it if you have the money.
