Heck, with SLI AA, i think the gts would provide better IQ. However, the selling point is better architecture via unified shaders which kills 7900gt's miserable shader performance (well at least in my experience with my 7900gt sli setup). IMO the trade off is worth it as long as he can break even selling his gts or pay upwards to an extra $50.
Yea, there are other reasons too for going to a 8800GTS.
I really wanted to get back to a single, (more) powerful solution. SLI is great and all, but when it comes down to it there are downsides too it too.
No vsync, increased tearing, compatibility problems (although I've never really had these problems).
Main reason, I HAVE THE MONEY. That about sums it up.
Now I got a reason to go into the FS/FT section
How much you think I'll get for these 7900GT's? Pre-vmodded?
I'm getting a 8800GTS for:
-IQ, can't beat the 8800 series for AF filtering
-More IQ, CSAA is good, etc...
-Better shader performance. The 7900GT's in SLI slowed down with HL2: Episode1 with the AA/AF on. Hopefully the 8800GTS will fix this.
-Oblivion performance. 8800GTS dominates mine even at stock speeds.
-FSAA+HDR. I think I'm gonna fall in love with it (with Oblivion)
-DX10 compatibility (but thats pretty far down on the list, above ones are more important)
A lot of games coming out are shader intensive. I think Rainbow Six: Vegas is one of them. Overclocked, a 8800GTS comes to within a few frames of a 8800GTX so I think it's worth it. I'm also doing it for the extra vram. On some newer games, I've had to reduce the texture quality so that (at least I think) it fits in the vram.
Man, how this has gotten a bit OT
