8800GTX temps?

Is anyone else experiencing high idle temperatures with this card? I haven't even had a chance to try it out in a game (or in 3D mark, for that matter) and I'm already noticing temperatues that bother me. My case has plenty of fans (1x 120mm rear exhaust, 1x 90mm rear exhaust, 1x 90mm top exhaust, 3x 120mm front intake), though they are designed to be quiet instead of efficient (liquid cooled CPU). The rest of the case doesn't seem to be too hot, but the graphics card is definately blowing out HOT air.

Is anyone else experiencing high temperatures with this card? I'm trying to figure out if that's just how these cards are, or if I should stress mine and prepare for an RMA...

Mine also has the same temps at idle, this card seems to just run hot. If this vothers you, as it did me, about the only thing you can do is use nTune to force the fan speed up.

My OCed GTS runs at about 60C idle and 80C load with the fan at 80% and with the case closed...with the case open it goes down about another 3-4 degrees. I think due to the massive amount of transistors these cards are gonna run hot. I'm actually surprised they don't run hotter.

R580 was safe up to 90*C, I imagine G80 is no different.

As long as the card doesnt lock up, then I would say heat is a non-issue. If it really bothers you that much you need to bite the bullet and either run the fan at 100% or buy an aftermarket cooler.

As long as I don't start to see color errors, artifacting, and slowdowns due to heat, I'm happy. I was just worried that these things required their very own fan blowing on them, or something like that. I mean, it's enough that your case has to be big enough for it, imagine if you had to set up a dedicated 80mm fan.

I'm glad (in a way) to hear I'm not the only one with these temps. I just hope the card can as much fahrenheit as it can FPS.

I can tell you that my 1900XTX, with a moderate overclock, hits 97-98 C with aftermarket cooling and sufficient fans... and it runs beautifully and never locks up or artifacts. At first it worried me but down the road, I saw the worries to be unfounded. It's just a hot-running card. May be the same way with yours.

I'm in the same boat... And the thing hovers in the mid-high 70's after I'm done gaming because the fan spins at such a low speed that the heat just isn't dissipated. I'm using the NV control panel to keep it at 75% (highest fan speed at which it's indistinguishable from the rest of my system) but this resets itself to automatic every time I restart... Is there any way to keep it set there?

EDIT - and it's more than just the temperatures themselves... While they're higher than I'd like I know they're technically safe. But the thing acts like a furnace with the fan spinning as slow as it does while idling sometimes, so the rest of my system suffers a little as well (although most of this heat is kept below the card and/or exhausted out the back - those ventilated P180 slot covers do have their advantages). I'm just not comfortable with it like this yet, coming from my l'il old 9800 Pro :x.

The problem is the fan on the 8800GTX is set to Lazy-Ass. Trying to override this under the nvidia controlpanel is pointless, your gonna have to get Rivatuner and set it with that if you want to video card to actualy pay attention to you. Once you do this the Idle temps drop to 58c, with naturally abit of additional noise.

Hey...your idle temps are fine. The G80 is meant to operate at these temps.
If you want, download and install the latest riva tuner and change your fan speed to 100% and your temps should drop atleast 10 degrees but there is really no need too increase the fan speed unless your just wanting to decrease the lifetime of your fan. Your choice...

Just so you know...my friend did the same thing with his Evga 8800GTX. The fan stopped after 2 weeks - he was really upset about it. Personally I never do that, G80 temps are perfectly normal under Idle.

Just to let you know, a decent fan can run at 100% for years(remember the thermaltake volcano, 2.5+ years at 6k)... If his fan burned out doing that then its only a matter time for the rest of us, set to stock or not.

same here. 60-80 C is just normal. I'm going to mount another 90 mm fan right above (errm below) the card fan as I believe this will lower temps. But 60 idle / 80 load should be OK.

I strongly recommend this:

http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=77194

If your case real-estate can afford it (it's a double-slot blower), by all means get one. The location is perfect for 8800 series cards' rear vents (not to the back of the case, but the one facing towards the bottom) and I'm getting ~70C load temps. It dropped the temperature by 10C+.

well like i said i stuck an 80mm fan right on top the radiators to "suck" air, set fan to 100% via riva tuner and my temps now are 53C idle and 72C load with 32C temps on my room...

wonder what the critical temps are for the 8800GTX?

BTW for those others worrying about their CPU being a bottleneck, check my rig Ü

I bought a slot cooler and as far as I can tell its a waste of money, the bottmom line is these cards run hot. I dont crash or anything after hours of playing WoW so the temps are more then fine. I will keep my eye out of aftermarket cooling MAYBE, cause I like doing them anyhow. I have a lifetime warranty from Evga so I am not worried really about the temps, I get the same temps as others have mentioned or there abouts.

Highly disagree. Which slot cooler did you buy? I tried it on my AMD rig, and check this out.
