A BLOGGER over at VR-Zone claims that an Nvidious conference call confirmed the GeForce 8800 Ultra for release on May 15, with reviews hitting the interwibble on May 1.

Whilst we're pretty sure that chaps on conference calls aren't supposed to talk about this stuff, the 8800 is 'confirmed' as a single-chip card, rather than the dual-chip hybrid SLI-a-like rumoured 8950 GX2. We suspect this is because Nvidia has had more than enough trouble getting SLI working on Vista, without releasing a product that relies on it for baseline performance.

Meanwhile, other sauces are giving the price point as a pant-wettingly massive $999. That's likely to translate to more than 600 pounds in real money, which is a bonkers amount to spend on a single component. However, it does suggest to us that the green team thinks that DAAMIT will launch its highest-end R600 in the $1k region, since the guys in Satan Clara are clever enough not to price themselves out of the market.

How long until we see the first $1k+ graphics card? How long until people realise that that's an Xbox 360, a Wii, a Nintendo DS and a truck-load of games?

Meanwhile, rumours suggest that a DX10, SLI-capable Vista driver will hit in early May to accompany the new card. Stay tuned. µ

Regardless the exact spec, I think it's pretty safe to assume that this part is what NV's been cherry-picking to be prepared for R600. Now that R600's been sort of MIA (or it'll debut soon but it kind of became pointless to this specific SKUs), NV can't wait any longer or they'll just waste the best G80 sillicons. (G81/G90 coming late summer) So obviously these are going to be limited quantity of another '7800 GTX 512' and prices will be (at least while selling) high.

Unbelievable.

Look at the 7800 GTX 512 MB

What a great deal that was.

It was the best card out there for what...a few months?

This is like a scam, but a scam by greedy companies.

People complain on a video card @$999 price points; yet some are willing to cough up $1000+ for a cpu. Some would buy an internal blu-ray drive @$700 and yet PS3 @$600 is expensive....blah blah...

People buy the top of the food chain item is either growing money on tree or for bragging rights with deep hole in the pocket!

You could have spent $800-850 on a couple cheesy Voodoo2's when they came out in the mid-1990's (in adjusted dollars). Given MSRP of $999 then even 10% less for retail is all of a sudden only $900. Think of the exponentially better experience that can be had for your money today.

"MEOW"... You seem like a person who watches to much A!N!M3

You know what i mean. Stop watching the crap with cherry blossom trees and cats and stupid Issy saying "Meow Meow"

A reasonable but erroneous hypothesis, sir. Indeed, I can hardly be watching too much when I watch none at all. I was going more with a Daniel Striped Tiger vibe. Meow.

Dude the people who complain about a $999 vide card aren't the same people that spend $1000 on a CPU.

Besides a CPU seems to have a longer life span for gamers than a video card.
