I was just wondering, what would be better?
  • 8gb ddr3 1333mhz Kingston ValueRam

    or

  • 4gb ddr3 1600mhz Patriot Gamer Edition (PGD34G1600ELK)

food for thought...

Well that would depend on just what exactly you plan on doing with the system and what the rest of the planned system specs would be.

I don't know why not just 16 GB RAM and max out your standard board being that it would still only be like $160.

How about you give us some food for thought?
* OS used
* Machine usage
* Exactly what YOU mean by... "what would be better"?

Isn't there something like a 1-5% difference from the fastest memory vs the slowest of the same type? I firgure doubling your total memory would negate any speed difference from the 4gb kit.

My bad, should have been more specific.

System specs are:
- Intel i3 540 @ 3.4ghz
- MSI H55-GD65
- 4gb drr3 1333 Kingston Valueram

basically, what would be a better option for gaming?

Which linux distro are you running?

LOL?!
No offense, but that is really the most awkward and unlikely question to ask a random person.

As to the originial question - RAM has really almost no impact on FPS in games what so ever. I still have DDR2 667 RAM (4GB) and play Crysis, Crysis 2 and everyting else out there on max. RAM only needs to be stable and plenty, that's all there is to it. (Unless, of course, you are an enthusiast and want to clock things and change timings for the sake of it)

I would go with at least 6-8 Gigs of ram, but the most important thing to think about is upgrading your GPU or CPU. Or possibly getting an SSD.

What are the rest of your specs? We still don't know video card, or your storage setup.

Of course you read what I posted earlier, right?

He never replied with his OS, so I made an assumption.

If the DDR3 in question costs 25% more than same capacity standard 1333/CL9 is probably not worth buying. 50% more it becomes a ripoff.
