8GB
Horizon Forbidden West 3060 is faster than the 2080 Super despite the former usually competing with the 2070. Also 3060 has a better 1% low than 4060 and 4060Ti 8GB.
Resident Evil Village 3060TI/3070 tanks at 4K and is slower than the 3060/6700XT when ray tracing:
Company Of Heroes 3060 has a higher minimum than the 3070TI:

10GB / 12GB

Reasons why still shipping 8GB since 2014 isn't NV's fault.
  1. It's the player's fault.
  2. It's the reviewer's fault.
  3. It's the developer's fault.
  4. It's AMD's fault.
  5. It's the game's fault.
  6. It's the driver's fault.
  7. It's a system configuration issue.
  8. Wrong settings were tested.
  9. Wrong area was tested.
  10. Wrong games were tested.
  11. 4K is irrelevant.
  12. Texture quality is irrelevant as long as it matches a console's.
  13. Detail levels are irrelevant as long as they match a console's.
  14. There's no reason a game should use more than 8GB, because a random forum user said so.
  15. It's completely acceptable for the more expensive 3070/3070TI/3080 to turn down settings while the cheaper 3060/6700XT has no issue.
  16. It's an anomaly.
  17. It's a console port.
  18. It's a conspiracy against NV.
  19. 8GB cards aren't meant for 4K / 1440p / 1080p / 720p gaming.
  20. It's completely acceptable to disable ray tracing on NV while AMD has no issue.
  21. Polls, hardware market share, and game title count are evidence 8GB is enough, but are totally ignored when they don't suit the ray tracing agenda.
According to some people here, 8GB is neeeevaaaaah NV's fault and objective evidence "doesn't count" because of reasons(tm). If you have others please let me know and I'll add them to the list. Cheers!

Thinking again of this disaster for nvidia sponsored crippleware on 8gb vram cards: nvidia should have launched all cards one tier lower

8gb 4060 as 4050 ti = $280
8gb/16gb 4060 ti as 4060 = $350, $400
12gb 4070 gddr6 as 4060 ti = $450
12gb 4070 super as 4070 = $550
16gb 4070 ti super as 4070 ti = $700
16gb 4080 super as 4080 = $850
24gb 4090 as 4080 ti = $1200+

I am thinking they will hopefully fix this line-up with the 50x0 series 🙏

Those prices and names would make too much sense. Except for the 4060 Ti 16GB at $400 which would never sell when a 4070 would only be $50. The problem is even Nvidia realized they screwed up and had to "unlanch" the 4080 12GB version but everyone ran to buy the 4000 series cards anyway rather than give AMD/Intel a chance. Nvidia could put a big middle finger as box art and people would still buy the cards.

Now if this thread is still around and active eight years from now when everyone else has moved on and started talking about how 16 GB is no longer enough for some of the newest titles coming out, then I think it may be necessary to reevaluate those sentiments.
As terrible a game as this outlaws looks to be. It will already fill up the framebuffer if it is there. It may not have to have it yet, but it's a glimpse at the future. As I suspect vram will be the best way to force obsolescence.

I don't think it's trolling; it's probably astroturfing from an Nvidia employee.

I doubt that as well. No one there would pay a person to continue bumping a thread full of other people disproving every point made by that person. It would just be better to say nothing and let the thread languish into obscurity.

I don't think anyone wants to relocate or they would have already. The question is who will pay to keep it going?

It's not that expensive to keep an Internet forum online. The amount of bandwidth required to transmit text and simple markup is minimal and the moderation staff are all volunteers anyways.

You could insert a ton of ads, but most users will block them because they're savvy enough to do so and those who can't won't stick around if it's too egregious.

It would make more sense to just have a smaller number of more minimalist ads from a single sponsor on a monthly basis. Give them a simple banner ad and a pinned sponsor post and it could cover the costs of keeping the forums running.

Which reminds me, ProTouring.com was looking to sell some ad space due to declining revenues and some aging hardware that needs replacing. I just got an email about the state of affairs on their forums.

I don't know what the hosting overhead for the forums are, but it might even be as simple as a patreon type arrangement could cover some/most/all of it.

This forum is worth something to advertise on, it just needs to be easy enough that the overhead of managing it doesn't cost more than the ads are worth.

TPU is the best place for us tech forum members to move when the time comes. No corpo overlords. I think if we all started posting there we'd outnumber their active posters. 🤣

Yeah I feel like if the AT financial team (whoever that is lol) opened up a patreon, the hardcore super dedicated OT/P&N posters alone would carry this website for the next 20 years at least.

overclockers.com is member owned and overclockers.uk is owned by a local computer store over there. Two options if you’re looking for something not corporate owned.

I Haven't been to either in ages; since I stopped caring about the intricacies of overclocking and tweaking. Is there room for filthy casuals like me? Or will the things some of us discuss here be fish out of water?

Both are very inviting from what I've seen. Despite the names, neither is really a haven of hardcore overclockers. The group at overclockers.com is small now, but basically just a group that likes computers. Mostly focused on desktop hardware and gaming, not as much about phones/tablets/laptops but those topics are there if interested. The overclockers.uk crowd is bigger and more active but also a bit less tightly moderated, though I honestly haven't logged on there in a while so maybe that's changed.

One of our members (I forgot his handle) got banned by W1zzard for questioning him about his Intel slant. I don't think I would survive long there

I see he's German. Which is weird because Germans are supposed to be AMD slanted.
Most of the staff have an obvious Intel bias. Swag, ad revenue, free trips, it's how Intel has always bought influence and favor with reviewers. Personally, it's a good time seeing trolls we banned here, clowning themselves there because no one limits them. It's like reading loserbenchmark.

Cool. We can all confab when/if the time comes. I am assured these forums are inexpensive to run. And we get great traffic here. Even the 12yr old stickies at TPU have less views than a popular thread here gets. I don't think the community managers for Tom's and here have any idea either, what the corpo overlords will do. But we need a plan B for certain. I know many of us frequent at least on other place or are part of the unwashed masses of reddit. But I like all of you and enjoy your posts. I'd miss you guys. I noticed @coercitiv doesn't post much any more. Miss the humor, insight, and knowledge already.

EDIT: And yeah yeah, I know, the only way you guys would miss me, is if someone bumped your elbow.

I gave up on TPU when I saw W1zzard respond to someone asking him why he made a specific choice in how he was testing an AMD part and that they didn't think it was fair(I think it was a GPU but I don't remember now, it was several years ago). His reply was something about AMD being incapable of making a good part so it didn't matter. I left the forum and haven't been back since. I still look at their reviews at times, just to see what data they are getting, but they aren't high on my trusted reviewer list.

You are not wrong. And 25 second runs early in game aren't exactly illuminating about the gaming experience... though he is far from alone there. They are building a Youtube channel, and I am anticipating he will find balance there. AMD rules the DIY scene, and has for years now. Tech tubers that treat AMD unfairly have a bad time. Then there is the possibility that Intel can't afford to help Wizz with his "editorial direction" anymore. I simply HAVE to be around for when he and the bois stop pimping Intel because there is no money in it. 🤣

Seriously, Intel going through IBM syndrome is the best thing to happen to the scene in ages. As to VRAM issues? It's been settled for a good while now. There are just the luddites we have to drag kicking and screaming into reality left on the opposing team. Part of it I identify with. I LOVE low budget gaming. It's a box of chocolates. Everything else is boring and predictable. With the caveat that Nvidia is insane and forces the issue. SW: Outlaws is a perfect example. LoTR: Gollum is what happens when it backfires spectacularly.

Never forget how bad cyberpunk was. Trying to drag 8th gen consoles along for the ride was the most lawn chair and popcorn moment for me.

Been busy at work + the kid is punching holes in my sleep schedule. Still read the forums daily though.

I'm not active on any other forums, in case anything happens here will probably follow the more informed people towards a place we can continue arguing if 8GB of VRAM is enough.

We need to know where to assemble. This is something the mods need to discuss amongst themselves and inform all us sheep so we know where to herd next!

I suggest the most important info is what is Tom's plan. Can anyone find out? They might keep here going. Look at [H]ardforum, still going after the main site was shut years ago. Tom's will want to leverage the traffic here if they're at all smart.

Unfortunately, the community managers don't have any more clue what the corpo overlords will do than we have. Again, we get high traffic here, and the forums are cheap to run. But if the idiots are in charge as usual, then ALL OF YOU need to decide where we migrate to, not the moderators, looking at you Igor. Authoritarianism FTL.

OcUK: No custom avatars is a big negative for me. I know some of you don't even bother with them but I like choosing my own. And WTH does this mean -
Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.
Overclockers is a ghost town.

Guru3D and Tweaktown are both ghost towns too. Even Wendell's level1tech forums are dead. I am registered at LTT forums but never go there. It reminds me of H.S. AV club bitd 🤣 Gamers Nexus reddit is quiet and could use the boost we'd give, but I dislike the format on reddit.

I am telling you guys, we get crazy good traffic compared to the vast majority of tech message boards. And far more active posters.

Ars is corpo overlords so no thanks. I'll go if that's what you guys decide on, but otherwise do not want.

On topic: 8GB cards have been around 10yrs. That you can still pay $400 for one is herp derp insanity.

With the amount of active posters we have here, if we pick a "ghost town" forum and can get even 1/4 of the posters to all move to the same forum, it won't be a ghost town anymore. I think the key is just to pick one that is well moderated and the least likely to shut down.

On topic: 8GB cards are great, if on a budget. I'd rather pick a cheaper 8 GB card that's not as powerful and pocket the difference (maybe save towards a future purchase) than buy one of the expensive 8 GB cards.

I thought we had settled on TPU but W1zzard is a clown.

I personally won't be migrating there but everyone can do as they wish.

I think this talk of migrating is off topic for this thread and premature anyway, but I do have an account on OCN forums, where I have posted before regarding some BIOS mods I believe.
