8INXP + Radeon 9700 = NO OC ?

I just got my 8INXP yesterday and completed the install last night. Everything went smoothly so I started overclocking - that's when I ran into problems...the video keeps crashing, I drop into 256 color and get a pop-up error message that says "Windows has recovered from a device failure" I'm certain it's the video because I lock the computer when running MadOnion but, have no problems when I turn the FSB back to 133. Here are the facts:

8INXP + P4 2.8 + 2*512 MB Corsair XMS 3500 + ATI 9700 Pro + Audigy2 + XP Pro

I am running the latest catalyst drivers, service packs, etc.

I locked the PCI/AGP freq's in the BIOS @ stock and then upped the FSB to a meager 143. All voltages are stock as are the RAM timings. I had this same problem on the MSI GNB Max but, thought it was because you couldn't lock the PCI/AGP freq's in the MSI BIOS (what a POS).

Anyone have thoughts/suggestions?

Hmm, your guess as to the pci/agp lock is correct as in most cases the 9700 does not like to be run with the agp speed out of spec. What power supply are you using and what revision 9700 are you using? The revision number is on the card after the serial numbers. I just heard most 1.3 revisions should not have this problem, but some earlier ones may.

I'll have to check the revision when I get back to the house but as far as the power I should have plenty of clean juice:

ENERMAX EG465P-VE

I'm open to any suggestions.....

I've heard of problems with the GB boards - if you use the standard pci/agp lock some vid cards cause this problem.

Try setting the lock to 34/68 instead of 33/67, see if that helps.

Thanks for the tip Tummy - I upped the PCI/AGP a notch and now the video is rock solid! I'm running my P4 2.8 @ 154MHz which is getting me a sweet 3.23 GHz - Sandra memory benchmarks is +3700 MB/s!

And EasyTune reads 3230, but 77/38? Ooops.
The Hardboys are also running into this problem of whether the lock is really locking. See the 166 and 83 screenie midway down in this thread.

(Early) INXP O/C Woes

For reference, I got my 2.40 (B0) up to 162, but my brand new 2.50 caused HD errors @ 115. Symptomatic of a PCI overload.

So, naturally I've spent a couple of hours unsuccessfully scouring the web for a PCI/AGP speed measurement utility for which an onboard sensor may not even exist. The closest solution appears to be a PCI card gadget, RD2, made by the BIOS Savior guys in Taipei. Anyone?

dmhinz, glad I could help. Nice oc and and system. what kind of 3dmarks are you pulling in there?

I haven't had any problems with my pci/agp lock. Everything works peachy dandy on this end.

The 3DMark Score is +1600 .... it's unbelievable! I had an XP2700/NForce2 and that was only getting 1400!

Actually, that score on the XP2700+ was on an ASUS A7N8X running @174 MHz (sync mode) = 2.26 GHz. While I agree that that isn't +3.2 GHz like on the 8INXP, I didn't expect to see a +200 point difference in the 3DMark scores.

what does "+1600" mean?
I'm just curious what your overall 3dmarks are. I'm pulling in around 14100 with my ti4400 (2.26b@2.9, 171fsb on the 8inxp) and had been toying with the idea of getting a 9700pro, but... Ida know.

I dropped my FSB down to 150 and am scoring 16015 on 3Dmark - I was scoring almost 17000 when I was running 155 but, had some stability problems after like an hour. By "+1600" I ment that I was scoring in excess of 1,600 - I forgot that 3Dmark was in 10k units and I should have said "+16000".

I used to have a Ti4200 and I like the Radeon much better.

Glad to hear you're having luck with the board.
Mine's still being held hostage by ncix.com!
Next shipment due 02/10/03 informed by email, (they claimed mine will be shipped then).
I have a P4 3.06 but didn't want my wife to kick my butt and only got 512MB of the TWINX 3200.
I went for the ATi 9700 Pro Retail and Audigy 2 with WinXP Pro SP1.
I too have an Enermax EG-465P-VE and was worried about it being able to handle the load.

Sorry to hear about the extended delay Kowan Isn't ncix in Canada?

We will have nearly identical systems as I am running:

P4 2.8 + 8INXP
2 x 512 Corsair XMS PC3500
Audigy2
Radeon 9700 Pro
Enermax 465P-VE
TDK 4x DVD+RW
Yamaha 44x CD-RW F1
Highpoint 1520 S-ATA controller w/ 2 WD 120 SE's

I just ordered a 15K U320 Cheetah and Adaptec 39320 controller. I do a lot of DV editing and will work this system like a dog. I am really glad I was able to get good advise from everyone about the PCI/AGP divisor issue - I never would have guessed upping the divisor lock would fix the problem.

Yes NCIX is in Canada, but they were the lowest price I found besides the only one listed as in stock.
I got one of the WD 80GB SE and figured I'd upgrade to SATA if it looks to be worth it later.

I had to wait for upgrading since putting a son through college isn't cheap.
Feel like a kid waiting for the motherboard. It should be one of the F3 BIOS versions.
Maybe even a new revision of the board by the time I get it.

Feel like a kid waiting for the motherboard
- LOL - I know exactly how you feel, my wife said the same thing about me when I tried to explain the stream of profanities that spewed from my mouth each time the ETA on this board got pushed back!

I don't know about SATA - if you check the "database" at www.storagereviews.com it doesn't look like SATA is all that. It seems hard to justify the wait and added cost for such a small performance increase and thinner cables.....

Yes those silly wives! And they say we don't understand them.

dmhinz
Which PCI slot did you end up using on the 8INXP for your Audigy?
I'm trying to check mine out in a BE6-2 and it's giving me nightmares.
Stayed up all night trying to get it to jump to an IRQ where it would stop stuttering.

P.S. I'm still using Win98 SE on the old setup and downloaded the current CL drivers.

UPDATE:

Nevermind.

Certain settings apparently do lock the PCI/AGP buses. Some burn-in, and switching from DVI to VGA, have subsequently just barely enabled booting and some light work at an fsb of 129.9 (=3247). Certain combinations of frequency settings work, others don't:

33/67/129 OK (=129.9)
34/68/129 OK
37/75/129 NG
37/75/128 NG (=128.5)

Here is my setup Kowan:

AGP: ATI 9700 Pro
PCI1: Highpoint 1520 SATA RAID Controller
PCI2: SB Audigy2
PCI3:
PCI4:
PCI5:

I may have to cahnge this around when my Adaptec 39320 comes in on Wed but, so far I haven't had any problems w/ the Audigy2. I also plan on changing my RAID setup from 0 to 1 and using the Promise RAID instead of my Highpoint controller and moving my Cheetah to the primary "C" drive.

Try setting your fsb...then reboot and go back to bios...set the pci lock to anything BUT 33/66 and reboot again. This should set the lock.

I was glad to read about your problem. I am having the same one. Althought I did not overclock I am locking up.
But I do not know how to make the changes you did. How about a helping hand. I am running basically the same setup as yours except the Processor P4 2.53 with 768 mb ram @2700
