8mb buffer hard drives, WD vs. Maxtor

The benchmarks seem to show that Maxtor DiamondMax+ 9 with 8mb buffer is faster than most WD***JB drives aside from the 2000JB and 2500JB (or possibly the 1200JB with the same platter size as the 2000JB).

I asked a friend who has both an 800JB and 80gb DM9+, and he says subjectively, the Maxtor feels somewhat slow, and he says the noise is also much lower on the 800JB.

I've been thinking about getting a 1200JB (hopefully, one with the same platter sizing as the 2000JB), so feedback on both 8mb cache drives is appreciated. I'm taking into account both speed and noise level (Haven't seen good deals on SATA Cuda 5's, and I don't have SATA or an adaptor).

Hmm, feedback goes both ways. Has anyone used both drives for a good period of time? My bud says the Maxtor is much louder...odd. Speeds, it looks like benchmarks say Maxtor is faster unless you're on a really big WD or one with the same density as a big WD.

I own 5WD Drives not one has failed in the last year so my votes for WD.

Only into the PC scene for ~8ish months so dunno how much feedback that is.

Either way, there both good quality manufactures.

I own both Maxtor and Western Digital. Both are great. I have three Maxtors and 4 WDs and never had a problem with either brand. And I agree with an above poster about benchmarks. Who can really tell the difference most times? Both brands are fine, you can't go wrong either way.

I love my WD 800JB and 600BB drives.

And I can't hear them over my 4x80mm 25dB (or so) fans, stock AMD HS/F and PSU/graphics card fans.

I have a Maxtor 80GB (8mb) and a Western Digital 100GB (2mb version). I prefer my Maxtor because
1) SpeedFan and Dtemp can read temperature from the Maxtor,
2) Can choose between maximum performance/minimal acoustical output/balanced modes.

If my WD drive had those two features, then I wouldn't have a preference.

Ugh...here is my complete, unobjective opinion, as I buy both Maxtor and WD indiscriminately...whichever is cheapest...and have owned at least a dozen of both

NEITHER one is more reliable than the other.

NEITHER one is any louder than the other.

NEITHER one feels any faster than the other. That goes for 8mb cache versions from both brands, of which I own both, and use both on a daily basis.

As for 8mb cache vs 2mb cache...

NEITHER one feels faster than the other. Again, I own both types and use them on a daily basis, for everything from surfin the net, to vid encoding, to gaming, and so on.

I have never had a problem with Maxtor drives, I do run a 40gig WDJB with no problems but I had a friend who "sold" WD drives and they were failing on alot of people I think they were the non JB and they were 160 gig. I think that either way should be fine. Or be a man and get the SATA 10,000 RPM WD

Don't post that kinda stuff unless you have done a search too, since searching "Maxtor Hard drive" turns up only two threads, even though you'd think there are tons more, and the two have to do with problem diagnosis. Searching "hard drive" also turns up mostly problem diagnosis threads

I have 8mb drives by WD and Hitachi and like the Hitachi better. I haven't used the Maxtor yet so can't comment on it but recommend you put the Hitachi in the mix since it comes with a 3yr warranty too. EDIT: Just checked and now it says 1yr warranty Time to call them and see if it was a typo on the 3yr that was listed a few weeks back....

After numerous failed WD 8MB cache drives I'm now giving Maxtor a shot. I will say that the Maxtor seek sound is slightly louder than the WD, but the seeks don't bother me.

It's when a drive has a high-pitched rotation that I can't stand.

I have owned 3 WD's and 1 maxtor. Had a problem with the maxtor though to this day I'm not really sure what caused it...Both are very solid companies so the best might just be "whichever you can get cheaper" but you certainly shouldn't put too much stock in something like the above post...Numerous failed WD 8MB's?? Yeah right...The failure rate of that HD is a fraction of a percent. the odds that he had numerous ones fail is astronomically low. Either he's full of crap or it's not the HD's...

Conclusion: They're both fantastic. Get whichever one is cheaper...

I think most HD failures are from people handling them wrong, not a defective drive itself (maybe sometimes but it's very rare).

buy the drive with the longest warranty, you will never tell the speed difference in the real world. I have had many drives by both manufactures, drive life can be luck--good or bad. They will die--get the warranty. It's a pain to reload the programs, but atleast you don't have to buy a drive. RRR

Go with the cheaper. I thi nk the Maxtor will be quieter though. If you don't care about noise, the cheaper the better. If any difference, you won 't notice it , and if you do because the way you work extra point in a hard drive score matters, get a raptor or better yet a 15,000 RPM SCSI drive...
