So I have a second computer in the basement slowly folding away. I tried to add it under clients on my main computer in the FAH Advanced control window. I put in the IP, it recognizes the computer, and then it just stays on "Connecting". What am I missing?

This will get you started: https://fah-web.stanford.edu/projects/FAHClient/wiki/RemoteClients

Remember to scroll down on the remote access tab and fill out both categories of access restrictions. Here's a picture of my setup on a computer I connect to.

I had everything set right, but didn't know I had to reboot the client. It's connected now. Doh!

Thanks

Any suggestions on a PCI-E card for my spare computer that will crunch at a decent rate? The processor in that rig is taking over 7 days to get through one. I need to get a video card for it because I plan to give the card that's in it now to my nephew because he needs a computer for college and has no money. I don't want to spend a ton.

The folks here with ATI cards will have to give you advice on those. I only run nvidia cards. As a rule of thumb, the more cuda cores the nvidia card has, the better the performance on FAH. Using p8900 WUs (core 17 zeta) as a reference my GTX570 (480 cuda cores) gets about 30,000 ppd, My GTX660Ti (1344 cuda cores) gets about 65,000 ppd.

I just went to newegg and sorted the nvidia cards by price from highest to lowest and then find your price range and then check out the specifications and look for # cuda cores. A GTX660 (960 cuda cores) is about $200. A GTX650Ti (768 cuda cores) is about $170 and a GTX650 (384 cuda cores) is about $150.

Keep in mind too there is only one core 17 project now. They are promising more in the future but if you get core 15 WUs your ppd may drop (no quick return bonus on these WUs.

AnandTech has a benchmark of F@H. But I don't know if implicit or explicit single-precision is the one to use? Edit: Can someone with a GTX 770 tell me where it stands?

Double-precision probably relates more to the next PrimeGrid race.

Here's the stats for Dec 26th @ ~21:00 UTC

Notice: I changed the teams back to the way they were originally. Peter's production dropped to communication issues and others changed dramatically. Pligmoz went up with Sunny129's help and Lane42's production went up too (nice optimizing ) MarkFW has increased production too.

I decided to divide the race into 2 stages:

Stage 1 (Dec 1st - Dec 24th) was won by the Scientists (congrats!! :thumbsup
Stage 2 (Dec 25th - Jan 1st) ????

The Thinkers are coming on strong for a possible stage 2 win!

BTW, I'm on vacation so this seems to be the best solution to lowering my stress level!

I don't pretend to know the answer to your question, but this link may help. The graphs to the right are what caught my eye.

having mentioned the pricing above, i thought it might be worth while to mention that i have a Gigabyte GTX 560 Ti (w/ the WindForce 2X cooler) for sale right now that is in excellent condition, works perfectly, and has warranty through 1/19/2015...and i'm ask only $80 shipped. that's for a GPU that outperforms the GTX 650 substantially in just about every category (including FAH, which surprised me at first, considering both cards have 384 CUDA cores). the only downsides are more power consumption and heat generation...that said, the WindForce 2X cooler is the best air cooler for the GTX 560 Ti when it comes down to balancing silence and cooling ability.

Well, I had another lock up on my dual 5639, so I missed another bonus (there is 200k) and my dual e5570's got another 8101, so there is 3 more wasted days.

Sorry thinkers, my boxes are killing me.

Don't worry mark, as Rudy Toody would say,

Can't speak for the others. I use ver 7, and FAHControl. And once I got used to it stopped using anything else. I have not had problems with freezing either. (yet)
well i must have just needed a restart, b/c FAHControl hasn't frozen since my last system restart [/knock on wood].

speaking of FAHControl, it actually isn't a horrible GUI/manager...i just wish it showed time elapsed along with estimated time remaining, like BOINC...unfortunately FAHControl only has estimated time remaining.

You know, for some reason, by SR-2 box (the dual E5639's@2.8) only lock up when I touch the mouse, and it tries to come back with a login screen (ubuntu 12.04) Any way to disable that ???? Just let it run forever with no screensaver and login ?

My total race points are the same in both Dec 26 and 27 stats, and my PPD is dropping like a rock. Box must have locked up again.

I'm sure you can disable that. I'm running linux mint these days but it's based on ubuntu. Try finding screensaver settings under preferences, administration or system settings. I don't remember exactly where it is. You should be able to bypass the login screen during boot and eliminate password request when it goes to screensaver, etc.

Also I think it's a good idea to use FAHControl when you want to check on your slots, but I "exit" FAHControl once I've checked things because it seems a bit "buggy". Exiting FAHControl doesn't stop folding. Another way to see if the clients are running is to open up a terminal window and type "top" and hit return. You'll see something like this with 2 fahclients running taking up all cpu time.

Forgot: to stop "top" from running, highlight the terminal window and hit the "q" key (quit).

If you're controlling FAH on there remotely, from another machine, why not just hit CTRL-ALT-F2 and leave the problems of window managers behind?

P.S. Your desktop is probably CTRL-ALT-F7 or F8.

I just view the box from HFM.net, but I have other boxes on the KVM its on, and if I touch that mouse, it seems to lock up that client.
