Don't know the vendor, but Ritek dvd's are great in my opinion.

The 4x Riteks +r's have always been made by Ricoh. Would assume the same here, but who knows?

Well not quite true. A bunch of new 8x DVD-R drives just came out.. NEC, Lite-On, and others..

I believe the standard for 8X DVD-R is not yet "finalized", but the drives are already for sale.

Please be aware that the 8x DVD+R discs Ritek is shipping right now have a media ID of "RICOHJPNR02". This is the same ID as their 4x DVD+R media. Contrary to what many of these vendors claim, drives like the Sony DRU-530A and BTC DRW 1008M will not write to them at 8x. They work fine with the other drives since they can write to 4x DVD+R media at 8x.

I'd be very surprised if the Ridata (Ritek) discs were their latest revision (RICOHJPNR03).

People are reporting 6X burns with the RICOHJPNR02 on NEC ND-2500A and 8X with the Plextor 708A and 708UF. I can personally vouch for the Plextor burning at 8x with this media, as well.

NewEgg had them for $93.99/100 shipped, but currently OS. They are expecting more on 1/17/04.

I think you mixed the type id's there. RICOHJPNR02 is 8x media, RICOHJPNR01 is 4x media. On the other hand RITEK...R02 is 4x media and RITEK...R03 is 8x media, ie:

RICOHJPNR00 = 2.4x Ricoh
RICOHJPNR01 = 4x Ricoh
RICOHJPNR02 = 8x Ricoh

RITEK...R01 = 2.4x Ritek
RITEK...R02 = 4x Ritek
RITEK...R03 = 8x Ritek

Ritek manufactures media for Ricoh using Ricoh dye and technology and even most of the 2.4x and 4x media Ritek sold under its own name have Ricoh dye. It now however looks like Ritek has started using its own dye for most of the new media it produces and sells under its own name so the 8x Ritek media should have id RITEK...R03.
It's however true that some companies (cough meritline cough) have sold 4x RICOHJPNR01 media as 8x media and while it burns at 8x on some burners it's not true 8x media.
