As stupid as spending $9,000 on virtual in-game items is, I will defend it. Since this is a computer hobbyist form, I bet most of us are sporting more than a few thousand dollars in teach gear that we don't really need. Nor do we all need those BMW M3s, which I'm told everyone but me in the ATOT and ATG boards drives.

Learn to read! I didn't say it WAS the cause of starvation. What I meant is that there are better uses for that kind of money to put to use, like a good cause.

You're assuming that they actually spent that much on the ship. Someone just took the $309bil ISK value and converted it after selling PLEX for real-world money.

There's ALWAYS a better use for someone else's money (apparently even if the value is in a ficiticious economy...someone call the whambulance) but I'm not convinced an actual dime was spent in buying the ship.

Found the actual killmail:

"Valued at $9000"

Yeah, right. I'd like to see a multitude of people actually offer and go through with $9000 for one of those ships, then I can agree with that statement.
You would be surprised. My 1 computer was making more than minimum wage running Diablo 3 24/7 before my accounts got banned. Made some serious cash.

Many people don't realize how much income some of the kids out there make just creating accounts to re-sell items from.

Starving people in America? You mean, the country where the poorest people are fat?

Please.

In Ultima Online, every object in the game was given a value and in theory could be destroyed.

The made Lord British and his castle majorly fortified. They didn't bank on the huge group of players that allied together to storm that castle.

They ended up sacking it.

Is that around the era they set him on fire? I was running a UO server for a while and had a donation system where people could buy items. It's incredible how many people pay real life money for pixel crack. Most of the months I made enough to cover the operating costs. Could have made a killing if I decided to sell artifacts and stuff but did not want to unbalance things so it was mostly consumable items that are easy, just long, to get in game.

EA is butchering that game so badly now.

I can see your point, since I have over 9k worth in server/network equipment. In fact I just spent close to 4k on a file server. I still want to build an actual VM server to go with it.

I know you can insure ships in EVE, but I'm not sure it's possible/practical with something that large.

And some of you aren't paying attention. He didn't pay $9,000 for the ship.

I'm pretty sure you can't insure supercaps because you can't dock them in station.
