So are you free to cancel after your year is up? I wouldn't want to get locked into something. Also, are there any other fees? I'd like to believe that it's $9.24, but I want to be sure that it's all I'll pay.

I used a "virtual" credit card# just in case. I don't think they can prevent you from transferring your domain. Some registrars will drag their feet about doing it, though.

Hey, Poker: That's a nice site. Thanks for putting me on to WordPress. It sounds great. I set up a site for my g/f to publish her stories, and this should be just what she needs.

edit: WordPress link.

Yeah, wordpress is sweet. It is actually available as a one-click install in the dreamhost control panel! When you log in its under Goodies | One-Click Installs. I really like wordpress because it has a large following and there are a ton of awesome plugins for it.

And to whoever asked, no there are no hidden fees. All you pay is $9.24. This promotion actually makes sense since normally dreamhost pays $97 per referral. When someone signs up and use this promo code, no one gets referral money so it costs them the same amount. I know this cause I got a few referrals and got no money for it =

Nevermind, I got it to work for $9.24 for a year...but:

Do I have to transfer my domain name to dreamhost as the registrant, or can I leave it with godaddy and just swap my nameservers? I just renewed with goddady and don't feel like switching registrants. But you can't beat $9 a year for hosting...

Anyone?

Earwax,

It should be fine with redirected nameservers. In the CPanel, if you go to Domains --> Add domain, it'll walk you through adding an existing domain.

HTH!

This price for a reputable host such as Dreamhost is fantastic.. but god I hate their Control Panel I wish they use something like DirectAdmin

oh well can't complain for <$10/year

That's a pretty good deal... if I wasn't still on that three-years-free deal from 1&1, I would pounce on top of this one for sure. I am also using Wordpress for my website... BlackAdam.com

That very much depends on how big your company is, and what your company do.

I just got XTLeage.com for the gaming league my friend is starting (and I'll host my crap on there).

Edit: I see in the admin panel about domain registration. Do I still need to add the one I picked in the initial setup?

Now Just curious... since he is using a referal link and making money on this deal, isn't that against the ANANDTECH forum rules?

The originator. You click on his link and it takes you to a website premoting the service, and then the link to dreamhost has a referral id.

He has had it up since March and nobody has said anything.

For a company I would get something else, "you get what you pay for"

To a company, paying $10/month or $10/year is no big deal.

We overpay $600.00 a month for our low end dedicated because of the uptime. We haven't had downtime in 5 years other then planned maintenance.

I am trying to convince the owner to switch but it isn't easy.

That's the $64,000 question, so to speak.

The $9.24 / year deal was a "7'th Anniversary special" - discounted from the "full" price of $120 / year.

Guess a lot of us will be looking for the next, latest and greatest, deal.
Especially if DreamHost's renewal price is anything over $X.

Trick is, what should DreamHost set $X at?

As a business, DreamHost ought to be looking at maximizing net profit.
And, they'll likely have to consider a ton of capital already invested and other big longer term (bandwidth? data center?) contracts.
They'll have at least most of a year's statistical knowledge about such $9.24 / year customers, and on a domain by domain basis, to boot.

I guess I'd make renewal offers based on each customer's statistical usage track record - probably via a "low use" discount / rebate, of some sort. Keep the "low use" customers for little bucks and charge full value to those waaay over the averages. No sense in losing money when you can statistically predict that is what is going to happen.

And, if done with an "open hand" - telling customers why they fall into whatever high or low use statistical bucket - might go a long way toward minimizing "churn" and maximizing profit.
